Sure, she's played a stripper (in "Closer") - and she's stripped down in films as diverse as "V for Vendetta," "Goya's Ghosts" and Wes Anderson's short "Hotel Chevalier."
But actress Natalie Portman still has an image that's squeaky-clean enough that it comes as a slight shock when Eric Bana describes his co-star in "The Other Boleyn Girl" by saying, "She's naughty," with a crooked smile.
Well, not that naughty. He's describing a day on the set when Bana, as King Henry VIII, and Portman, as Anne Boleyn, started giggling - so much so that they actually held up production for more than an hour before they could regain their composure.
"She cracked up more than me," Bana noted.
Portman, told that Bana had ratted her out, cracks an ear-to-ear smile that illuminates what is already a face of surprising beauty.
"Well, Eric is a giggler," she says in self-defense, "plus he's hysterical. And that day, we just got the giggles. It was funny for everyone else for about 10 minutes and then they started getting pissed off. And then it's really not okay.
"But Eric is so funny. He has this amazing ability to go from joking to serious just like that. He'll be making a joke about his codpiece and go from that to playing this stately king. It's incredible to see that switch."
Portman switches things up herself in "The Other Boleyn Girl," opening Feb. 29: Anne Boleyn is the first character she's played who has more dark corners than well-lighted surfaces. In this adaptation of Philippa Gregory's 2001 historical romance, it's Anne who suffers from being "the other Boleyn girl" when it comes to the affections of Henry, who first is drawn to her more demure younger sister, Mary (Scarlett Johansson).
