No Plans for "Golden Compass" Sequel

No Plans for "Golden Compass" Sequel

Dakota Blue Richards has said she is not sure if there will be a sequel to "The Golden Compass." The film was based on the first book in Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy but the actress said she had not been informed of any plans to adapt the remaining two.

The movie, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, did not perform as well as expected in the US, although it was a hit in Europe. It was also slammed by the Catholic Church for "promoting a cold and hopeless world without God."

The 13-year-old, who played the lead role of Lyra Belacqua, told Teletext: "I think they are going to see how it does when it opens in Japan. It's set in Oxford so it is going to be better received here."

At this point, the visual effects wizards at Rhythm & Hues have already completed the opening scene for the possible sequel, and "Golden Compass" has brought in over $330 million in worldwide ticket sales. Even though it cost $180 million to make, the price of the second installment would drop drastically since most of the effects have already been prepped. The only reason why the studio might be reluctant to proceed, is due to the fact that most of the earning would have to come from outside of the US.

If you've read the books, you'll know the movie did not give the story due justice. In fact, I thought this movie left many key elements and the fact that it left out the final scene entirely (that would have been a spectacular special effects sequence I might add had they done it) makes me question whether this group should produce a sequel. This is an epic story and worth telling the right way, not in some slapped together piece of rubbish. I dearly hope this group does not produce a sequel.

Everyone's allowed to their own opinions, but when you get an organized cult like the Catholic Church "blasting" the creative genious of today's story tellers, I start to have a problem with it.

If these "men of God" can't see past their own alter-boys long enough to realize that this is just a whimsical story and not a philosophical statement, then something is seriously wrong.

I just saw the movie tonight with my family and it was a WONDERFUL story...and I genuinely hope that a sequel is made. It's one of those movies that really didn't get the attention it deserved when it was in the theaters--probably because of the whining and complaining by all the cults out there.

YOU GO, HOLLYWOOD MOVIE EXECS! DON'T BEND TO THE WILL OF MINDLESS TYRANTS WHO BELIEVE THAT THEIR OPINIONS AND BELIEFS ARE "THE WILL OF GOD"! KEEP MAKING MOVIES THAT ENTERTAIN ALL OF US AROUND THE WORLD WHO CAN WATCH A MOVIE AND ENJOY IT FOR WHAT IT IS: ENTERTAINMENT.
