Smith wins damages over Hitler comments

Will Smith has won damages for libel over a false allegation that he described Nazi dictator Adlof Hitler as a "good person", reports the Daily Star.

The actor was angered by quotes attributed to him in a newspaper that defended the actions of Hitler.

Smith's solicitor Rachel Atkins told the High Court's Mr Justice Eady that the libel was "deeply distressing to him" and caused "acute embarrassment".

Atkins told the court: "The claimant is a highly respected actor of international repute and a man of complete integrity.

"The article alleged that the claimant had declared in an interview that Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler was a good person.

"The allegation is false and without any foundation.

"It wholly misrepresents the claimant's actual words, given in an interview to the Daily Record, a Scottish newspaper and website."

The damages won relate to an article that republished the newspaper's quotes on the World Entertainment News Network.

The defendant has agreed to pay Smith damages which the actor intends to donate to charity.
