Although Heath Ledger’s father pledged that the actor's daughter, Matilda, will be taken care of, Heath’s uncles are warning the Brokeback Mountain star's ex-fiancee that she may have to battle to get Matilda's inheritance. According to a report in the Sydney Daily Telegraph, Heath’s uncles are fighting with their brother Kim over their grandfather’s estate.
Heath’s three-page will had been filed in Manhattan Surrogate's Court and revealed that the actor had less than $145,000 in New York assets at the time, including a $25,000 Toyota Prius and $20,000 in furniture and fixtures.
While the will, created in 2003, before the birth of Matilda in 2005, left everything to his parents and sisters, Heath’s father, Kim, gave assurances yesterday that Matilda and mother, Michelle Williams, will be taken care of.
"Matilda is our absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family," Kim said in a statement. "They will be taken care of and that's how Heath would want it to be."
But a family feud among the surviving Ledgers has arisen over the handling of Matilda’s assets, based on Kim’s alleged mismanaging of their grandfather’s estate.
The report in the Sydney newspaper states that Heath's uncles Mike and Haydn, “accused Heath's father Kim of mismanaging their grandfather's estate to the tune of $2.5 million.”
"Kim was in position of guardianship and we had to take him to court to take that off him because a sum of $2 million went missing," Haydn said. The report adds that Haydn “said the fallout from the fight over their grandfather's estate in 1994 created a terrible strain between himself and his brother.”
Haydn told the Daily Telegraph that he is "concerned for Matilda," adding that he had concerns about the distribution of funds. Haydn and his brother Mike added that they had spoken to Michelle William's father, Larry, about their worries, and asked him to advise his daughter to hire a lawyer.
The paper reported that Kim Ledger could not be reached for comment about his brothers' claims.
