No "Constantine" Sequel?

No "Constantine" Sequel?

During the release of "I Am Legend," director Francis Lawrence was constantly asked about a possible sequel to the 2005 "Constantine." Lawrence has mentioned that a second installment could be a reality, but he would only return to produce.

In other interviews, producer Lauren Shuler Donner has stated that a sequel was a possibility. "Yes, you might, with Keanu [Reeves]," she said in November 2006. "We have been working with a team of writers to come up with a story."

Following that, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura touched on the topic as well. "I know all the filmmakers want to try to make number two," he said. "We love the character. We're hoping that we can find a way to make even, I'll say, a darker, harder version of it. We're not at that place yet where we really have the ability to get that done, but I know Keanu wants to play that and all of us think that there is a natural, new and darker adventure with Constantine."

Now, IESB spoke to Keanu Reeves during a "Street Kings" press junket, where Reeves crushed all the "Constantine" sequel rumors, by stating that he will not return for another installment. Despite planning another movie at one time, he is now simply not interested in the character anymore.

This isn't the first time that Reeves has rejected the notion of sequels, which finally resulted in a "Matrix" trilogy. So, its not out of the question that "Constantine" could return for one more. It will either take more money to get Reeves to reprise his role or the whole thing may just be done with a different lead actor. Stay tuned.

I agree with some of the others here -- the last thing we need is a crappy sequel to this crappy misbegotten movie. I'm not a Keanu-hater, but he was the wrong choice for this part -- but really, that casting mistake didn't matter considering the mess they made of the movie. I love how they commented that they were "trying to come up with a good story" -- there's over 30 good stories in the Hellblazer books, one of which the original movie was supposed to be adapting! Of course, having seen the movie, I doubt whether the people who made it were even aware the Hellblazer books existed.

What we need is a total remake, by different people, with at least SOME form of respect for the source material. Imagine, a movie made by people who actually LIKE the original work! As for actors, I think Clive Owen would be best, but anyone would be better for the role than Reeves.

I really want more Constantine! but on the other hand it might just be best to leave it alone since it was so good... I don't want a crappy sequel

Quite frankly, I'd like a "Hellblazer" rehash instead of a strait-up sequel.

I think Russel Crowe would be a fantastic John Constantine.

Good, I don't want to see a half rate sequel, Reeves was not the right choice for this character and it's not to be set in LA. start over from the begining and follow the books.
