Scoop: Iron Man 2 Plot And Villain Details

Marvel Studios made it official yesterday, announcing that Iron Man 2 is now a sure thing. That means it’s time to start thinking about what direction they’ll go for the sequel, and don’t think for a minute that Marvel doesn’t already have plans.

Tonight I got a message from a long time friend of the site, and one of our most spot on, regular scoopers. She’s had her ears out, and tells us she knows some of the things currently being considered for the next Iron Man movie.

Apparently the Samuel L. Jackson cameo after the credits in Iron Man wasn’t just a throwaway. Our scooper says his Nick Fury character will figure prominently into the next movie. One of the plot lines being pushed for the sequel has Jackson’s Nick Fury character enlisting the help of Tony Stark in going after a terrorist called The Mandarin.

If you know anything about Iron Man outside the movie, then you know that The Mandarin is one of his most notorious villains. The movie actually alludes to him. The terrorist group which captures Tony Stark at the beginning of the film is named “The Ten Rings”, a reference to the ten rings of power the Mandarin seeks in the comics.

We don’t know if the ten rings will still be a part of the character, but our scooper does say he’ll “have a monster at his disposal by the name of Fin Fang Foom.” That might be a nice change of pace. Give Iron Man something to fight besides his mirror image in a bigger suit. Meanwhile Fin Fang Foom also plays a role in Iron Man comic lore. In the comics, he’s an extraterrestrial dragon.

In addition to new bad guys, our source says they may be planning to involve other superheroes in the film. Maybe in the form of the cameo Iron Man is supposed to do later this summer in The Incredible Hulk. Chief among those is Thor, who may show up in more than just a cameo, possibly helping Iron Man. Thor has his own movie coming out the same summer Iron Man 2 hits, so that makes a certain kind of sense. It would be a way for Marvel to get people interested in a superhero franchise which, really isn’t as high-profile. Other possible superhero cameos include Hawkeye and Black Widow.

While our source for this is tried and true, please keep in mind that none of this is final yet. It’s still very very early in the Iron Man 2 production phase. With no script yet, anything could change, and with Iron Man 2 not being released till 2010, we’re going to have plenty of time to talk about it.

Normally i don't go for super hero movies however this movie was done right. I walked into the movie theater with no expectations what so ever. Only things I knew about Iron Man was that he was a super hero and not an "A list" one at that and it was a Black Sabbath song title.
The movie impressed me from the get go. Having Gweneth Paltrow in the film also helped. With these super hero films, they either have it or they don't. If the writers and directors play their cards right this film could be the most successful super hero movie yet. Good writing, good acting and a good story that remains truthful to the comic book legend itself are the necessary ingredients for a successful super hero movie. Pure escapist family entertainment, what more could you ask for?

I saw the film. It's solid. Well made and everything about it worked perfectly. Now a knight vs. a dragon - what could possibly be more right. If the dragon is handled right - look out its going to scare the guts out of everyone. Now if they go with the dragon in the comics - it is not going to scare anyone. I'm looking forward to the next ones.

I seen Iron Man when it was released and as I expected it to be it was amazing. If Marvel is going to do this right they can and should do and Iron Man 2 as well as an Avengers Movie. They already set the stage for War Machine to make an appearance so be smart and go for both of them.

This Seriously just made my day. hahaha

I don't know if the whole Fin Fang Foom thing will work...
I mean... IRON MAN, while over the top with the technology...still stuck to reality and it did seem like OUR world.... SO i really think having a extraterrestrial dragon would change that alot.
    But maybe thats just me?
But then again, SPIDERMAN 1 & 2 were kinda set to today's time, but they did do the whole alien- venom thing for SPIDERMAN 3?

Stormage- They ARE working on an Avengers movie
That's why they're making Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, and possibly another X-Men movie.
They want to introduce the characters individually before they make one big movie.

SWEET! Finally, a real comic book villain or two!

The freakin' Mandarin should have been in the first one. He's IM's main villain! And as for Fin Fang Foom, he'll be awesome! This probably wouldn't be a good time to mention that not only is he a monster, but he talks also.

I wouldn't mind seeing Whitney Frost as a possible love interest, since Pepper should end up with Happy Hogan, NOT Tony......and Whitney is also a kick ass villainess.

And for those that don't want to see FFF or Mandarin (who IS NOT a terrorist, he's more of a "I'm going to take over the world" kind of guy), it could be worse, it could be the Red Ghost.

The Mandarin is one of my favorite comic book villains....along the lines of a Ra's Al Ghul and Vandal Savage!

Finally, Marvel Comics catering to comic fans!

noo!! i don't want them to ruin iron man. if they absolutely HAVE to make a sequel, it should be about more terrorists and evil PEOPLE and stuff, and it should have more of the interesting origin stuff than fighting like the original. i don't want to see tony stark battle a frigging dragon! i just wish that they wouldn't make a sequel.

I'm surprised that you would picture Nick Fury as Clive Owen... I mean seriously, I have never seen them look remotely alike, be it in the Daredevil comics, Punisher, or anywhere else. Also, in the new Ultimates comics he's black lol. The whole reason Sam Jackson was cast as Nick Fury was because in the comic they were discussing who they would be played as if there was a movie made of them and Nick Fury said he would be played by Sam Jackson.
Anyways, see Iron Man because it is absolutely incredible, and is that Mandarin dude the same villain from the recently made cartoon Iron Man.... please message me!

It would be great to see them working on an Avengers movie. We've seen what they did with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, give some of the other groups a chance.

It would also be appropriate if they let Rhodes be WarMachine to back up Tony in the new film. I'm not sure if Fin Fang Foom would be a good villain choice. We don't want anything too CGI looking. We want real!

    Till all are One!
