Ford feeling fit 'for an old f*rt'

FOR moviegoers in the Eighties there was no bigger star than Harrison Ford.
He entered the decade on a high after stealing the show in Star Wars as wise-cracking smuggler Han Solo.
His reputation grew with his Solo reprise in The Empire Strikes Back then it went stellar as he whipped audiences into a frenzy as Indiana Jones.
Now Indy, possibly the greatest action hero EVER, is back after a 19-year absence.
At 65 (he is 66 in July), Harrison is again donning his fedora and leather jacket and unfurling his whip to bring us Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, which opens worldwide on May 22.
I met him at a beach-front hotel in California and, despite his reputation for being grumpy in interviews, he smiles when I ask if he had any reservations about playing an action hero at his age.
“I don’t see him that way,” he says: “He’s involved in action. But it’s kind of a fantasy adventure-come-action thing.
“I am probably as fit, or possibly fitter, thanthan I was 18 or 20 years ago.

“Part of it is genetic, part of it is a willingness to work hard to keep myself in the best shape for an old f*rt.”
He has grown old gracefully, allowing his hair to fade to a natural grey.
The silver stud in his left ear is the one concession to a youthful yearning.
Harrison believes becoming a father to his girlfriend Calista Flockhart’s adopted seven-year-old son Liam keeps him connected to the spirit of youth. The family are pictured below.
Harrison says: “I don’t pretend to be anything I am not age wise, but Liam keeps me feeling connected to this growing and maturing process which is so much fun.
“And these particular years are so spectacular. Kids absorb and learn at a rate that never happens again in your life. It’s brilliant to be part of it and watch it.
“It’s brilliant all the way through. I have five kids aged 41, 38, 20, 17 and seven. Sometimes with the oldest ones I feel like I have children of my own age.”
None have followed in his acting footsteps but Harrison says: “Each person finds what engages or challenges them. Why would you expect your kids would be interested in the same things you are or have talents for the same thing as you?”
