It’s the “funniest [book] I’ve ever read,” said “Superbad” star (and newly minted three-time MTV Movie Award nominee) Michael Cera of “Youth in Revolt,” a popular coming-of-age story he’s starring in within the month.
It’s also, at least in parts, borderline unfilmable, he laughed.
“I don’t know if any of that will be in there!” he said of a risque scene between the hero (Nick Twisp) and his best friend. “There’s a lot of stuff where you read in the book and you realize it’s gonna be in the movie and you’re like, uh, that might just be really awkward in the theaters!”
Mind you, this coming from a guy who wore those yellow running short shorts throughout “Juno.” Could it get worse than that? Turns out it can, chuckled Cera.
“The last third of the book Nick’s disguised as a woman going to school and in the book when you’re reading it’s just fine and totally believable but if I’m just wearing a dress?” Cera mused. “Unless I had like ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ make-up and prosthetics, you know, I don’t know if they’re gonna believe this!”
He’ll have to buck up and give it his best shot. The novel by C.D. Payne is renowned for the very things Cera thinks make it somewhat silly in real life - its biting satire, epic feel, and general absurdity.
“It’s hard to describe,” Cera said. “But oh! It’s a great book!”
Ever read “Youth in Revolt”? Think Cera is a good choice for Nick Twisp, the 14-year-old protagonist? Sound off below.
