Clint Eastwood Thinks Spike Lee Should Shut His Face

A little bit ago I posted regarding Spike Lee's comments at Cannes, accusing Clint Eastwood of tacit racism because no black actors appeared on screen in Flags of Our Fathers or Letters from Iwo Jima. "If you reporters had any balls you'd ask him why," he told reporters. "There's no way I know why he did that -- that was his vision, not mine. But I know it was pointed out to him and that he could have changed it. It's not like he didn't know."

That post touched a nerve and elicited a barrage of comments from you folks, some of them nasty, but many interesting and thoughtful. So I figured I'd be remiss not to report Eastwood's recent response in a Guardian article to Lee's remarks.

Eastwood expressed a sentiment regarding Lee that I guess a number of you would agree with: "A guy like him should shut his face." Elaborating, he defended the historical accuracy of his depictions, pointing out that no black people participated in the impromptu Iwo Jima flag-raising ceremony depicted in Flags of Our Fathers. Eastwood also pointed to Bird, his 1988 biopic of black New York jazz musician Charlie Parker, and his forthcoming Nelson Mandela film The Human Factor, where, he promises, he won't "make Nelson Mandela a white guy."

Eastwood implies in the Guardian piece that Lee actually complained when he made Bird two decades. ago. That can't be right, I thought. Surely, a guy accusing Eastwood of not casting a sufficient number of African-Americans in his films wouldn't have complained about Eastwood's decision to tell the story of a famous black musician. Right? Well, I did some digging, and found these comments from Lee on the subject, made during a discussion of Lee's own jazz film, Mo' Better Blues:

"I saw Bird, Clint Eastwood's portrait of Charlie Parker, in the fall of '88. Bertrand Tavernier's 'Round Midnight, which was released two years before, was a slightly better film, if only because of saxophonist Dexter Gordon's performance. Both were narrow depictions of the lives of black musicians, as seen through the eyes of white screenwriters and white directors. Shortly after seeing Bird, I read that Woody Allen was planning a film about jazz. Now, wait a minute! First Clint Eastwood, and now Woody Allen! You know I couldn't let Woody Allen do a jazz film before I did."

Now that we've heard from Clint, all we need know is to hear what the Coen brothers think about Lee's accusation that their films treat life as a joke.

You said it munkybeans86. Can't add anything more to that.
I do say though, that Eastwood should choose his words more carefully.

Spike Lee expresses himself better with his movies, when he opens his mouth in public it's just a disaster.

I for one admire both directors, they're both two of the greatest directors of our time. In this case though, it seems that Spike Lee put his foot in his mouth. I don't appreciate all the sudden Spike Lee bashing, he's a talented man...although his acting ability is lacking...he Is a Great Director.

Clint Eastwood is better than Spike Lee in every way possible. Don't got nothing against Lee, but he's just a whiny bitch at times.

I dont know about Spike Lee. Over the years he has made racial remarks about white people. So I think he's the one that needs to be called out.

I have the deepest admiration and respect for Clint Eastwood,as an actor and a director. His films are humanitarian and I find it hard to believe that he would be motivated by any racism. At the same time-I find Spike Lee to be a social activist as well as an excellent film director-and he is blunt and angry-coming from a whole other reality from Eastwood.Perhaps his passion and vision overclouds his worldview-how could it not?!! These guys are brilliant, talented artists and I can appreciate both different worldviews and how they came to be.We are all wrong sometimes in our perceptions and judgements of each other.Spike Lee is only human too.

I haven't seen the film in question, but I find it hard to believe that there was not ONE black soldier present during the time in question. Perhaps not at the "impromptu Iwo Jima flag-raising ceremony" but doesn't the film show more then just that one particular moment in time? Could so great a historical inaccuracy, have been overlooked by Mr. Eastwood?

That said...I think Spike Lee is probably one of the LAST people top be playing the "race card".

I'll be honest...I haven't seen very many of Clint Eastwood's films (as a director or actor) and probably fewer of Spike Lee's, but I have to say that what I have seen has been "hit or miss" with me, but seldom without merit.

I believe that 'When The Levees Broke' is probably one of the most important documentaries of our time.

I agree with the first comment aswell, if anyone involved in this is racist it's definitely Spike Lee, not Clint. Clint is like great friends with Morgan Freeman and has made him a key star in more than one of his films. Clint rocks, Spike is punk ass b*t*h!

  • Spike Lee is a loud mouth idiot, I remember when I first saw Summer Of Sam which isn't a terrible film but in that film he makes a total joke of the New York punk scene in the late 70's. It is one of the most inaccurate portrayals of a sub-culture that I have ever seen. The film just shows his own bias and prejudice toward a certain culture of white people. His vision of the punk scene was beyond narrow, so really who is he to talk of people making narrow minded films on things they don't understand? Spike Lee has really only made one great film in his whole career, and that's Malcolm X. This guy doesn't have anywhere near the clout to even stand next to Clint Eastwood, never mind bad mouth him from miles away.

  • I'm surprised Spike Lee hasn't complained about the lack of black people in Schindler's List.

  • BRAVO Clint, for being able to say what almost everyone else was thinking. Spike Lee seems to think that just because he's black, it's ok for him to be incredibly racist towards white filmmakers. it's not. i hope Clint goes Dirty Harry on his ass.
    cheers
