John Cusack's new film War Inc., a personal crusade actually, deals with war in a fictional Middle Eastern country but in a funny way. Strange? Cusack, the film's writer and producer, doesn't think so.
The IESB talked with the filmmaker while in his London hotel room about War Inc.
"War, Inc." is a political satire set in Turaqistan, a country occupied by an American private corporation run by a former US Vice-President (Dan Akroyd). In an effort to monopolize the opportunities the war-torn nation offers, the corporation's CEO hires a troubled hit man, played by John Cusack, to kill a Middle East oil minister.
Now, struggling with his own growing demons, the assassin must pose as the corporation's Trade Show Producer in order to pull off this latest hit, while maintaining his cover by organizing the high-profile wedding of Yonica Babyyeah (Hilary Duff) an outrageous Middle Eastern pop star, and keeping a sexy left wing reporter (Marisa Tomei) in check.

Cusack said when they talked about making the film he thought, "let's go make this crazy movie. We don't have the money to do it, we don't have the time, it's kind of an impossible thing to try to do, it's very experimental, but let's just do it anyway, and let's just hope we make it interesting enough or strange enough that people will want to talk about the ideas in it, and people will want to listen to the message."
The film opened at the Tribeca Film Festival in April and is now showing in a limited theatrical run.
How was it working with the cast of War including Hilary Duff, Marisa Tomei and Ben Kingsley? "If you can have a movie where one day you have a beautiful pop star playing with live scorpions, and you can work with your sister, and then you get to work with Marisa Tomei, and then the next day you get Sir Ben Kingsley willfully and excitedly getting into a garbage truck in Bulgaria - you have to consider it a good day."
War Inc. expands this weekend to a few more markets in the following cities: Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle and Austin. It will expand again on June 20th to Washington D.C.
