Clive Barker’s Midnight Meat Train Gets Derailed

The upcoming Clive Barker film, Midnight Meat Train, will be receiving an extremely limited theatrical release from Lionsgate on August 1st. The company has already shifted the film’s release date several times so this news of continued shoddy treatment should come as no surprise. The limited release will be followed by a quick reacharound onto DVD sometime in October.

Based on one of the many excellent stories in Barker’s classic “Books of Blood” collection, Midnight Meat Train is the grim and gruesome tale of subterranean shenanigans beneath New York City. A photographer (Bradley Cooper) looking for fresh subjects takes a late night ride on the subway and comes face to face with a mute soccer player named Mahogany (Vinnie Jones) with a penchant for beating his meat. With a shiny metal mallet. Things get progressively crazier from there as we discover exactly why the subway butcher does what he does. If screenwriter Jeff Buhler and director Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus) retain even a scintilla of Barker’s original ending then audiences are in for a happy ending indeed. Early reviews of Midnight Meat Train have been positive, and there’s a definite shortage of unique, R-rated, balls out horror films in Hollywood today… torture porn crap aside… which makes Lionsgate’s decision that much more puzzling.
