Christian Bale Chats with Parade

Christian Bale Chats with Parade

My morning was made when Erik posted about Peter Travers' glowing review of The Dark Knight, although that also makes it all the more painful that I will be nowhere near a movie theater on July 18. (Please let there be midnight screenings!) Anyhow, as the Batman buzz continues to increase, there's a good interview with Christian Bale in Parade Magazine. There are excerpts on the mag's website, plus some extras at Just Jared.

The biggest nuggets: First off, Bale is all about Batman -- to the point that he's said: "What Batman is all about is a double-sided edge; there's a duality to this character, which makes him still interesting to play in the sequel -- I hope in a third," and " I don't know if I will grow out of it one day. But I still have a love of just being perverse." The big, dark feature film wings have never made it to a fourth installment with the same actor, but it's excellent to hear how into the character he is.

Bale also talks about the future and Terminator: "We have an opportunity with it for a continuation, but also a reinvention, and I have to say, much the same way in my mind as we have with Batman." This isn't as cool. Batman's life was set up well before the films, and the world of John Connor wasn't, so I'm not sure how well a whole reinvention can work when we haven't even gotten one full version. Thoughts?

I've watched several TV appearances of Christian Bale and his thoughts on his role as Batman, more so from Batman Begins though. He always seemed so excited about it and just so into the character. He has expressed his love for dual characters many times so it's no surprise that that was one of the things that really drew him to play Bruce Wayne/Batman and as far as I'm concerned, he's been the best.

As for the "reinvention" of the Terminator series, I agree with the fact that it would be rather difficult to reinvent something that hasn't even been fully created yet. The third one wasn't what I was expecting, but in a bad way. I think what he's saying is just that they're working to make the storyline more fluent and put together than what we were left with in the 3rd one. If it weren't for Bale and his brillance as an actor, I honestly could have cared less about the new installment coming out, but now I'm rather exited to see what he's going to do with the roll of John Connor.

Not sure how that's going to work with Terminator. I loved the first two films and was quite disappointed with the third. Could Bale breathe some life into John Connor? Definitely. A reinvention? That might be stretching it a bit.

Bale was born for this role; Bale is Batman--dark, deep, intelligent, compounded with a sense of mystery to him [he is not all over the tabloids & barely in the news]. He seems so settled in this role. I thought Keaton was good as Batman; he is #2 in the part to me. But Bale put the blockbuster in Batman and all before lost their luster!
