Contest: Where Could The Dark Knight Go Next?

With the entire world wrapped up in The Dark Knight this weekend, I thought it would be fun to hold a contest for fans who can't stop thinking about Batman. The Dark Knight was such an amazing follow up to Batman Begins, that I'm not sure how another sequel could even be made. However, considering it's about to break box office records, I'm sure Warner Brothers is willing to pay whatever it takes to finish this trilogy. With that in mind, I'm wondering what kind of story we might see in a third film? What villains would work? How might Batman get himself out of the predicament he is in at the end of the second film? How could anything ever surpass what Christopher Nolan just created with The Dark Knight? We've decide to host a writing contest to see who can come up with the best story for a third movie.

The rules are simple: write the best story for the sequel to The Dark Knight in 500 words. The stories will be judged by our resident comic guru and Batman fan Roman Chavez and contributing writer Andy Adair. The best stories will be published later this week and one top winner will receive the following prizes: a hardcover copy of Batman: The Killing Joke graphic novel as well as three full-size Dark Knight posters (painted wall, burning building, Bat Pod). To enter, all you need to do is send an e-mail to contests.firstshowing@gmail.com with the subject "Dark Knight Sequel Story" and the story contained within the e-mail. Entries are due by Midnight on Tuesday, July 22nd. Please check your grammar and spelling, as those could count against your chances. Good luck and have fun!

    What about Black Mask?
    The guy was pure evil, and i remember from the comics that i read about him (yes, i used to read comics when i was about 12, give me a break i am only 15 now) he decided to start a massive war in Gotham against Batman and his others allies. Now, to make this story happen you will need such characters as Robin, Batgirl, nightwing etc. But what if Nolan would just use Black Mask? I mean he changed the story of Harvey Dent(Two-Face) and it turned out to be a success(i liked it anyway). I say bring in Black Mask, who is a criminal lord, start a massive gang war in Gotham and get Batman to resolve it. Along with it, you can use Catwoman. My story sounds a bit unrealistic; considering Batman have to fight against many enemies but i still think that Black Mask would be a perfect villain for next movie and maybe if Two-Face is still alive(& i am sure he is) then he can fight against batman & Black Mask. Any other suggestions?

    what up ohiostateguy, funny you should mention man-bat thats a villain that had crossed my mind as well but it seems they like using these more human and realistic characters rather than the crazy out there creatures such as man-bat. However, it is interesting to imagine what it would be like. Keep the comments comming bro I enjoy bouncing ideas and opinions off someone that knows there shit like you do!

    She would be a great villain for the third one, I agree, but her name is actually Talia Head (pronounced Heed).

    And instead of dumbing down a Bane, Batman has so many "stupid" villains. They could use Man-Bat (also a dual identity, scientist Kirk Langstrom) or Blockbuster.

    I'd really like to see Lady Shiva too.

    Well look at the Joker, it was done before, but Heath brought a new aspect to him. A darker, and sinister creation, to which I think no one could ever do again. So bringing Catwoman back into the third would be just. Thalia is good idea, and I didn't really think about her until someone posted it. As for the other villains your right. When Joel took over the Batman franchise he basically killed it. Mr. Freeze, Posion Ivy, and Bain were basically butchered.

    In regards to this next movie (if it does indeed happen) there have been many comments about the love interest for bruce/batman. One of the most popular suggestions has been catwoman for many various reasons and while I agree that it makes sense I have to point out that it's been done already and was done very well. I'm not sure I could get all that excited to see it again... Yawn! Since it would be a supporting role and not the main character I like the idea of Thalia Al Ghul because it's creative and ties things together nicely. It would be a great story of her and bruce falling for eachother and yet conflict between her and batman. The only problem would be if she is a popular enough character to put fans in the seats. Either way you know there will be a female and these two are the front runners but I wouldn't use Ivy, she wasn't really much of a love interest for him anyway. As for that main villian he wont be something crazy like clayface cause they prefer real villains- I agree.

    A third movie could be huge but they have to do it right, keep in mind with the last set of batman movies the third was when they started to suck and the fourth was just terrible. My thoughts, two-face was pretty good in this movie so more of him might work. Do not disrespect Ledger's performance by casting a new joker(that idea died with Heath). Since they seem to struggle with villains that we havn't already seen I guess they could improve the riddler and make him darker but forget about penguin, ivy, catwomwn, freeeze and all of those who have been done cause if thats the extent of our creativity (recycling characters that have been in movies) then maybe we should stop doing batman movies, which would really suck. At least if you want to re-use a villain try one like Bain since they screwed up and ruined him in the movie Batman and Robin. As far as batmans trouble with the law I think that really works and I'd run with it the only one he ever got along with is Gordon.

    At the end of The Dark Knight, they honor Harvey Dent, but don't discuss wether "Two-Face" really died. He could have been just knocked out. Which could lead to one of the greatest stories with Two-Face known in the Bat universe. Harvey captures Batman and holds him for trial for the deaths of Rachael and others. Two-face becomes Judge, Jury and Proscution. Two-face eventually finds Batman not guilty. Meanwhile, you could have one of these two villians running amuck in Gotham, Ventriloquist with Scarface or Mr. Zsasz, a psycopatic killer who leaves his victims in lifelike poses and marks his body to keep count.

    I personally think Thalia Al Ghul as a love interest/villain would be a great idea for a story. It would round off the trilogy by bringing a bit of Batman Begins and it's storyline into the mix.

  • The next movie is going to revolve around Two Face, but they left it open for a new romance for Bruce. The only person I see there would be Catwoman/Selina Kyle. As for someone to play her I think Angelina Jolie would be awesome. As for the continuation for the Joker, why not have Harleyquinn? She'd do anything for her Mr. J. No Robin please, and Batgirl is still too young.

  • I really felt ending in at that note made he seemed like we're going to the beginning events of Batman comics because Joker was in #1 and Batman is started to get known as the one who kills people(just like the comics). I mainly want to say villain choices: don't do one that has been done before although Two-Face was like ****'in awesome and the new Joker is my favorite but I like to see new ones like but if they have to use them again, it should be strong to the plot line and have great importance, without that, the villain shouldn't be considered. Man Two-Face was so awesome!

  • I KNOW THE THIRD ONE WILL BE BASED AROUND 2 FACE. PROB THE RIDDLER, STAY AWAY FROM THE PENQUIN, POSIEN IVY, AND MR FREEZE. I GUESS CATWOMAN WILL BE OK. HOW ABOUT A DEATH IN THE FAMILY STORY LINE THAT WOULD BE SWEET!!! ID LOVE TO SEE SOMEONE THAT HASNT BEEN ON THE BIG SCREEN YET AS A VILLIAN LIKE VENTRIOQUIST AND SCAREFACE, OR KILLER CROC, MADD HATTER

    Eva green is a good choice, bt for me it should be either:
    Eva mendes, Helena bonham carter or probably, Keira knightley (i dont know why, she just have that face!)

  • Well, I'm not gonna write a 500 word piece, but from what I've read over on imdb people are thinking the next one will be to do with Catwoman because of something that was said in he Dark Knight about Batman's new suit.

    And if the next movie is to do with Catwoman my pick to play her would be Eva Green. Or possibly Emily Blunt.
