Aaron Eckhart Reveals Fate of Harvey Dent and Two Face

Yesterday, a screener for The Dark Knight leaked all over the interwebs, so the entire world has officially enjoyed Chris Nolan’s Batman sequel. Nevertheless, let me whisper “SPOILER ALERT” in your ear like a geeky Craig Mack. In a couple of new interviews, co-star Aaron Eckhart has revealed the ultimate fate of Harvey Dent and Two Face per the ending to TDK and this second sequel we love to speculate about…

“[My character is] dead. I couldn’t even get the words out of my mouth. ‘Hey, Chris, am I–?’ ‘No. You’re dead. You’re dead,’” Eckhart told AICN. “…Well, it’d be easier than anything to bring him back, but… it’s like Chris said on the tour. He wasn’t thinking about the next movie when he made [THE DARK KNIGHT]. All the vegetables were in this stew. I think that this franchise has shown that it doesn’t have to bring back characters. I mean, there’s still Catwoman. I’ve heard Angelina Jolie really wants to do Catwoman; I think that’s a great idea. I’ll be a happy audience member this time.”

Do you guys agree with Eckhart that it’d be “easier than anything” to bring Two Face back for the next installment? Like most of us, I’ve had this debate with friends. One of my minor quibbles with TDK is that Two Face’s appearance in the film entertains a Dick Tracy-type cinematic reality, whereas The Joker, his goons, and Lt. Gordon are based in a realistic universe that’s drawn comparisons to Heat.

Given, Two Face’s arc in TDK is swift (some fans have said too swift) and his final scene in the film is dubiously played (so is The Joker’s), but I feel that infection would have set in and killed him if a character ultimately did not. One of the counter arguments to this is that Dent, beloved by his peers and the city, could be medically treated and make a still-conflicted return in the next film with lots of scarring and facial reconstruction. And of course, there’s the chance, albeit small, that Eckhart is setting us up for a surprise. So, Dent’s not returning, but what about Nolan?

“He never said he’s going to make another one. I’m sure they drove the Brinks truck up to his house and dumped money on his lawn. But I think Chris wants to go out and make other movies, too. And he should. He’s an independent filmmaker at heart.”

Money on the lawn? Meh. Nolan is probably sitting poolside in a purple beret next to an original work of Francis Bacon, demanding that Warner Bros. put his “face on the one dollar bill.”

Discuss: Eckhart’s statements aside, do you think Two Face should return? If so, in what state and what’s his new arc? As it stands, was TDK’s take a definitive one for this major character? Is there a chance Eckhart is being sly? Angelina Jolie for Catwoman? How many films do you expect Nolan to make before a second sequel?

i dont think two face should die....i think the idea of him comeing back would be great...cuz everyone still thinks hes a good guy...and him turning into a crazed killer would bring in some intense seens...and batman would get off the hook for those 5 murders

I thought two-face was a great character and Eckhart did a great job but if he's dead then he's dead and thats that.Unless Eckers is being sly and he'll make a suprise appearance, the scamp!Nolan obviously has plenty of other ideas for another Batman and if one of them is Jolie as Catwoman then i'm not going to say no to that.Nor would Brad Pitt i should imagine!
Johnny Depp OR Guy Pearce for the riddler,i'm not bothered which one as they are both great actors who would do a great job.

they shouldn't kill off Two-Face cause of how great of a job they did with him.. plus the mobster that Eric Roberts played didn't die from worse. also, they should put someone else in the movie instead of the usual suspects.. why not Harley Quinn instead of Cat Woman. or someone else that would catch people by surprise?

Well I certainly wasn't expecting Harvey Dent to be dead I thought he was still alive! But assuming that he IS dead I don't think it would be very smart to bring him back unless some other-worldly power is brought up in the sequel which is NOT Batman-like! I think it is possible that Aaron Eckhart might be tricking us but if he was I think it would be FUN to be surprised and see him in the next movie...if there IS another movie but that's for Chris Nolan to decide.

SPOILER! SPOILER! What gave away that Two-Face died is in one scene it mentions that Batman broke his code and killed people, therefore, it's pretty obvious.

I think the only way Two Face should have returned is if the Joker was coming back with him. Since there are no longer plans to have the Joker come back in a third film I think it is safe to say that Two Face should be left out.

Im not a major fan of Angelina Jolie's buy I think under the direction of Nolan she could easily flourish as Catwoman. As far as the other villians go They should have Philip Seymour Hoffman play the Penguin.

Im going to step away from the rumours of Johnny Depp playing the riddler. I hope they cast someone along the lines of Casey Affleck or Guy Pearce maybe who has been with Nolan before on a film. Johnny is high profile, everyone expects him to do good. Make a bold decision and people will anticipate it even more.

There are plenty of great villains to bring to the screen instead; Riddler, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Bane, the Black Mask, the Mad Hatter, the Penguin, even Ra's Al Ghul since we didn't actually see him die in Batman Begins. To keep with the continuity of the ending of Dark Knight and explaining why he is the Dark Knight versus the dead White Knight, it would definitely be better to leave Harvey Dent dead than to have him return.

They could, but in my opinion they shouldn't because that would mean the whole film would be about revenge, which has been done really well in the last film. Also it would kind of spoil the end of the Dark Knight, make it less meaningful. There is so much more out there to bring to the Batman/Bruce Wayne character so I think they should do that. I hope Nolan does it. I think he understands the kind of Batman movie that I like to see and what so many others would like to see. Pretty dark, a good story with in-depth characters. Although it's fantasy he sort of makes it more realistic by justifying things.
