Don Cheadle Replaces Terrence Howard in Iron Man 2

It has always bothered me when a new actor is brought in to replace another actor who has already been established as a franchise character. I don’t think I’m alone in this viewpoint. The first time I noticed this occurrence was when I was a child and Sarah Chalke replaced Alicia Goranson as Becky (otherwise known as the “Two Beckys”). Sometimes the situation is forced upon a movie studio, like with Richard Harris’ untimely passing, which forced Warner Bros to recast Michael Gambon as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series of films. But other times it just comes down to a disagreement over money. And so appears to be the case with Iron Man 2.

Marvel Studios has hired Don Cheadle to replace Terrence Howard in the upcoming Iron Man sequel. Cheadle will play Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark’s best friend and future War Machine. Director Jon Favreau has made numerous hints that War Machine may play a part in the second film. The Hollywood Reporter’s sources claim it was a conflict due to financial differences. Earlier this year, it was widely speculated that Marvel was trying to low ball Favreau with an offer not much higher than his initial payday for the first film. It is not unusual for salaries to double for a sequel, especially when the first film outperformed to the level that Iron Man had. But from what I’ve heard, Marvel believes the superhero characters themselves are the real stars, and some have said that the company is being thrifty in their negotiations for their future projects.

Most people will agree, Howard and Downey Jr had incredible chemistry. Who knows if Cheadle will be able to reproduce the same magic in the sequel. That said, it is difficult to be angry with a a-level actor like Cheadle coming in for the assist.

Discuss: How do you feel about Don Cheadle replacing Terrance Howard as Jim Rhodes/War Machine?

If this is true, I'm sorely disappointed. I hate it as well when they replace actors. Howard embodied the character and trying to picture Cheadle in it is really difficult for me. They have different acting styles and I'm sure it just won't be the same. The same things occurred for me with the Holmes/Gillenhall switch in the Batman movies.

I cant believe what im reading from you people! howard was one of the weakest parts of iron man! everyone i know who "knows movies" has agreed across the board that this so called chemistry is easliy reproduceable, because howard actually played a very boring rhodes. howard is an ok actor, but cheadle is one of the most tallented actors in the world. this cant be anything but good for this franchise.

You just to had let the dark-skinned brothers win, didn't you, Terrence?...joking! They're both great actors, but Howard made Jim Rhodes his own. That "Next time" moment really got me anxious to see him as War Machine. I can't really picture Cheadle in WM armor, but maybe they'll surprise me.

I don't have as big a problem with this as most people. In my opinion, only a few actors are bigger than their roles, like Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones or Han Solo, or Marlon Brando as Don Corleone. Replacing them would be unimaginable. But remember, Harrison Ford also played Jack Ryan, a character which has been successfully portrayed by other actors. Characters like Sherlock Holmes, Lois Lane, and especially James Bond, are "bigger" than virtually any one actor (although most have a favorite, as I often do). Consequently, a small supporting role that truthfully represented little actual screen time (like Rhodey in "Iron Man") is certainly not bigger than any one actor, even one as talented as Howard. And, quite frankly, if the part is to be expanded in the sequel, it's good news that an actor of Cheadle's caliber will be handling it. No offense to Howard; I think he's great, but Cheadle is an even better actor.

    god damn it
that just sucks, i really hope this is a rumor, cuz first replacing actors for stupid reasons is stupid. and replacin an actor that really fit his role well is stupider, if marvel is gonna be cheap on all their movies then marvel movies are gonna suck. marvel sucks
