Enough With The Romantic Comedies, Anne Hathaway!

Anne Hathaway, darling, I think it's time for an intervention. You've been doing so well lately, getting rave reviews for Rachel Getting Married and looking poised and intelligent when asked about your sleazebag ex-boyfriend. Most of us have even forgotten that you were in Get Smart, which really wasn't up to either your or Steve Carell's talent.

But you're already starring in Bride Wars, the generic romantic comedy with a trailer floating around the Internet, and now you've signed on to another one. Fiance sounds like a fine movie, just fine, and it gives you a starring role, but aren't you beyond that now? Variety says you'll play a woman who breaks up with her fiance and tries to find herself, but finds her parents meddling in her life instead. That sounds like an Everybody Loves Raymond re-run, Anne, not a movie.

So, OK, Burr Steers is directing, and he made Igby Goes Down and an upcoming movie I'm inexplicably excited about, 17 Again. So it's possible this, like Devil Wears Prada, will look awful on the surface but turn out OK in the end. Maybe you should get Meryl Streep involved somehow, just to boost your odds. Or maybe you should hold your breath and wait for roles that suit your talents, rather than the ones that bring in the big bucks.
