Hollywood. It’s amazing how one word can spawn such a motley gamut of reactions: money, love, hate, corruption, avarice, envy, dreams, fears, etc. All are words those within and without the Hollywood system could use to describe their feelings towards the mainstream Mecca of “the biz.” Some people, like Michael Bay or George Lucas, see Hollywood as the land of milk and honey, whereas others like David Lynch and David Mamet see Hollywood as confirmation of Satan’s existence. On rare occasions and with great exception, there are those who exist within the overlap of the Insiders vs. Outsiders Venn diagram who choose to use their position as insiders to reveal Hollywood’s seamy underbelly to the outsiders. Iconic filmmakers like Billy Wilder and Robert Altman took every chance they got to step on the toes of the studios, even when working exclusively for them. With What Just Happened? Art Linson attempts to join that group.
