Channing Tatum as Captain America?

Channing Tatum as Captain America?

Cinematical visited the set of "Dear John" and had a chance to chat with the film's star Channing Tatum. The site asked whether Tatum has ever considered playing a superhero, especially Captain America.

Apparently, this is not the first time this has come up. A crew member has tried desperately to get Tatum to consider starring in "The First Avenger: Captain America." Here is what Tatum had to say:

"Captain America? Oh my God! Oddly enough, I just got given a book – one of the painters came up and here gave me a book. I would think about it. Maybe it's destiny! I would definitely think about it – I just got done doing 'GI Joe,' though. If 'Joe' does well, and it doesn't seem to be the exact same story, then I would. I don't know. They seem to be very, very similar – almost identical. Except for the – I think he takes a serum? Like a strength serum? [But the WWII setting] could be very very cool."

Do you think Channing Tatum would make a good Captain America?

I agree with "SuperChuck". Knowing the character is of particular importance! Channing Tatum not knowing the character means that having him play the roll would be a bad idea. "Duke" and "Captain America" are quite different!

I also agree that Matt Damon has the skills and wherewithal to understand the character and portray him appropriately, at least in terms of what I know about & what I know of Matt Damon. (He at least appears to be smart enough to understand the differences between the characters, even if I haven't heard him comment on that (yet?) ...!)

Choosing who will play this roll will largely decide whether or not this movie will flop & die or rise and triumph. I really hope that they do not screw it up!!!

I hafta agree with Superchuck, You really do need to know the character to play it well. I think Matt Damon should play Captain America- he could pull it off real well and he has that "All American" look.

I don't think anyone would make a good Captain America if they don't understand the character. GI Joe and Cap are not very similar at all.
