Robert Downey Jr. On Marvel’s ‘Avengers’ Film: ‘If We Don’t Get It Right, It’s Really Going To Suck’

This week, MTV News named Robert Downey Jr. as the actor we’re most thankful for this year, and we here at Splash Page couldn’t agree more. After all, not only has Downey taken the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man and made it his own, there doesn’t seem to be an actor more excited about not only his place in comics-based films, but the future of the genre as well.

The internet damn-near gave the actor a standing ovation when news broke last month about Downey not only signing on for “Iron Man 2,” but also officially joining the cast of the absurdly-anticipated “Avengers” movie. So naturally, we had to get Downey’s take on the upcoming film that’s destined to be the Holy Grail for Geekdom, and you can rest assured knowing that the actor is well-aware of how important the film will be to not only Marvel, but the comics community as a whole.

“If we don’t get it right it’s really, really going to suck,” said Downey. “It has to be the crowning blow of Marvel’s best and brightest because it’s the hardest thing to get right. It’s tough to spin all the plates for one of these characters.”

However, in taking on the role of a key member of the Avengers to such digital fanfare, Downey has in a sense become the face of the operation — at least until other Marvel films such as “Captain America” and “Thor” get made (and, likewise, until Marvel figures out how to handle the Hulk). To a lesser actor, this seems like an insurmountable amount of pressure, but Downey remains level-headed, and like any good soldier, knows he’s got a job to do, knows he’s already got a solid team at his side, and looks forward to seeing how the other films will play into the “Avengers.”

“I think its important that I do what I’m supposed to do which is keep my side of the street clean,” said Downey. “The danger you run with colliding all these worlds is [director] Jon [Favreau] was very certain that ‘Iron Man’ should be set in a very realistic world. Nothing that happened in ‘Iron Man’ is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants it warrants much further discussion.”

Never one to shy away from speaking his mind, Downey had plenty more to say not only just in terms of comic films, but his upcoming slate as well. Read more of Robert Downey Jr.’s thoughts on his past, present and future projects (and why we’re so thankful for him) at MTV.com.

Do you agree with Downey’s thoughts on the challenges facing an “Avengers” movie? Are you excited to see him playing the role of Tony Stark for the foreseeable future? We wanna hear from you in the comments!

    @ Matt19911:
In terms of box office, yes, TDK definitely took the cake. And for good reason. Complex, intriguing plot... unforgettable characters... slam-bang action... of course it did well.
But Iron Man was definitely the surprise of the summer. And a pleasant one, at that. Since my brother dragged me in the first time, I've been hooked. And I get the feeling that many people felt the same way, so in that view, Iron Man was the hit of the summer for me.
And I must disagree - killing off love interests does not equal better/more action sequences. After Rachel is killed in TDK, Wayne is hardly angry... more introspective, mourning maybe. And if by chance there is more action, that hardly makes it a better film. Case in point: Pirates 3. Throwing loads of pirates and freaky goddesses together didn't exactly work out for them.
And about the Iron Man action sequences... I was quite pleased to see them played down, actually. It's not about a superhero, it's about a man. <3

Sorry to the last commenter, but he did not blow out every film last summer! The Dark Knight, making $1,000,000,000 and becoming one of the best films ever made voted by critics and proper audiences ... I think your wrong! However, he (Iron Man) does have the opportunity to become the best Marvel character, but back to the topic, he is right, this is either going to be huge or a major flop possibly destroying future marvel movies! As long as we don't see them moping about as usual, "Does (s)he love me or not?", who gives a $hit! I liked the Dark Knight especially for killing off the love interest, not that I didn't like Maggie Gyllenhall but that ith angers Batman, which equals more fights, which equals better movies = the circle of life! lol but seriously it needs to be fun most of all and actually be an action film, not with just 3 fight scenes (I'm looking at you Iron Man!)!

Robert Downey Jr rocked the role of Tony Stark / Iron Man and blew out every other film debuting last summer. And the competition was as tough as it's been in years. I'm been very excited just seeing the Tony Stark cameos he's done so far and can't wait to spend my money on seeing Iron Man 2 and the Avengers. The fact that he's embraced his place in the Marvel Universe with such zeal isn't surprising. Robert Downey Jr has a long standing record as a professional actor who always puts 110% into every role he plays and always makes the character his own.
