Don Cheadle on Replacing Terrence Howard in "Iron Man 2"

IGN had the chance to speak to Don Cheadle about his reaction to finding out that he would be replacing Terrence Howard as Jim Rhodes in the upcoming "Iron Man" sequel.

"I got a phone call from my agent saying they were offering me the part," said Cheadle. "That was kind of it. It happened very fast, and I had a very short time to answer. Literally, overnight. I was unaware of what was happening with Terrence. And when they called me I asked what was going on with Terrence. I've worked with Terrence, I've known Terrence for a long time. And they said they were moving away from him. So it's not like I was taking Terrence's job, because the job was already gone. Someone else was going to do the part. I don't know who the next person in line was, but that's who they were going to. And I literally had a few hours to accept the job or not."

Cheadle says that he had to make the decision to take the role without seeing the script. "I can't reveal anything because I've seen nothing," he explained. "There's no script yet. All I know is as much as you know, that Rhodey looked at that suit and said, 'Next time.' So I imagine I'm going to be in a suit."

He also confirmed that the part of Rhodes will be expanded. "I think the part will be bigger, obviously," he said. "I mean, in the comic book, if you just read the comic books, you know that character becomes pretty instrumental in Iron Man's life, so it's not a sidebar character. It's kind of integral to the story."

Do you prefer Cheadle or Howard in the role?

I've heard both sides of the story and I'm STILL in the dark over whether Howard was being arrogant or simply kept in the dark (but he does have a reputation for being "difficult").

Unfortunately, I never really liked Terrence Howard and have always been a fan of Don Cheadle's. He's funny, he's a nice guy, and it seems to radiate on the screen. I feel he will have great chemistry with RDJ as well. I think this was a good decision.

the last commentor was harsh on howard, calling him arrogant while admitting you dont have the whole story. this was way more the studio's fault than howards, but i still like the change. howard is a solid actor, but cheadle is one of the best actors in the world. i think its a good move.

I'm not too clear on the reason why they dropped Howard to begin with, but I think I like the idea of Cheadle replacing him. From what I understand, Howard wanted more money than they offered him. Apparently, he wanted more than they were offering Downey (the actual star). That's the kind of arrogance that gives most actors a bad name. He did a role as a broke ass wannabe pimp for MTV and he think's he oscar worthy?! I think not. Cheadle FTW!
