Disney Kills Chronicles Of Narnia

Disney Kills Chronicles Of Narnia

The last Narnia movie Prince Caspian earned Disney a cool $200 million or so in pure profit after production costs, and you’d think that would be enough to guarantee at least one more sequel. You would be wrong.

The third movie in the Narnia series (and my favorite of C.S. Lewis’s books), Voyage of the Dawn Treader had been in pre-production at Disney, on track for a 2010 release date. Now though, Disney has pulled out. HR reports that Disney will not co-produce and co-finance the next Narnia movie.

Though the last movie did indeed make a lot of money, Disney saw the writing on the wall. It made money, but a lot less than the first film. Perhaps more importantly, the buzz over Prince Caspian was decidedly muted. The film was barely more than an afterthought in a summer full of Batman and exciting Robert Downey Jr. projects. Clearly Disney expects that downward trend to continue with Dawn Treader and they’ve decided to get out while the getting is good.

That doesn’t mean the Narnia series is dead and in the box. Walden Media is the production company which has been making these movies for Disney and they already have a strong relationship with 20th Century Fox, via their Fox Walden Studios. Walden will probably start shopping Dawn Treader around to other studios looking for financing and there’s at least a chance they might be able to talk Fox or someone else into funding Aslan’s land. Or maybe they too will take a look at the mounting disinterest in this series, compare it to the tremendous cost of getting these movies done (the first two cost in the $150 - $200 million range) and take a pass on it. For now Aslan is lost in development limbo.

Because they all can't be masterpieces like 'High School Musical 3' and 'Hannah Montana Movie'.

Seriously, I remember a time when Disney used to value this type of project. Now its just cash and marketing tactics that lead to horrible pre-teen "shallow" programs rather than quality classics such as 'The Lion King' and 'The Little Mermaid'.

OMGsh! $200 mil. isn't bad at all! And in competition with Iron Man and Batman, that's pretty good. Disney making a big mistake. But, hopefully some other company will take it on and finish bringing this tale to life.

Walt and Roy have very different visions. I do pray someone else finishes it as we need good clean movies.

Lets see here. Thier whining cause the movie didn't do well against Batman & IronMan. How many films did. I would have thought $200 million would be nice. I'll take that Disney. I hope someone picks this up and the movie makes tons more. Lets send Walden Media a message not to give up on this movie franchise. There aren't enough positive movies out there & we need more. Enough of Harry Freaking Potter.

Why do you get so upset with this, Disney is in all its right to decide not to continue producing more movies or the Narnia series. As everybody is saying The film industry is all about money specially in Hollywood and Disney is not the exception they definitely will have have their reasons for not producing more Narnia movies.

i know the film business is all about the money but still. they'd already started on it and now they've pulled out. they should do that.
i hope another company picks it up and it makes HEAPS of money.

  • F Disney. Maybe if the 3rd one is picked up by a studio that isn't looking to milk a franchise for every penny, then maybe it'll be good. Sorry, I wasn't a fan of the first two, but maybe now the 3rd film will be ok. maybe.

  • C'mon people! GROW UP!
Disney, and all those enterprises are ONLY about money. They care less if some people would like to see the 3rd movie, while the other 80% doesnt give a sh*it. Its all about bussiness, it always has been about bussiness and it will ALWAYS be. I woulda done the same.

  • It is a shame it is all about the money. Just because they don’t make a ton of it doesn’t mean they suck. The first two Narnia films are far from crappy.
