PGA Announces Its Best Picture Nominees

PGA Announces Its Best Picture Nominees

The Producers Guild of America have made their list of nominees known for Best Picture, Best Animated Feature, and Best Documentary. While the Directors Guild essentially has the final word (look for their nominations on Thursday), I think we've locked down our Best Picture contenders for this year's Academy Awards. From the Producers Guild, the nominees are:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The Dark Knight

Frost/Nixon

Milk

Slumdog Millionaire

I know it's not totally out-of-left-field, but I'm still amazed that "The Dark Knight" is an award contender. It's clearly has a snowball's chance of winning, but if you told me in 2007 that a Batman movie would get nominated for Best Picture, I would have called you an ignorant fanboy and laughed in your face. I'm just a nice guy like that.

It looks like "Wall-E" is out of the running as is any animated feature because that category has become a kind of prison that makes sure that only "Beauty and the Beast" and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" will be the only animated movies to ever receive Best Picture nominations. The nominees for Best Animated Feature are:

Wall-E

Bolt

Kung-Fu Panda

And yes, I'm as shocked as you are that "Waltz with Bashir" isn't included but that may be because the Producers Guild of AMERICA doesn't wish to nominate a film from Israel. But then how do you explain "Slumdog Millionaire" which is part-British/part-Indian?

Finally, there's the Best Documentary Feature category. If we just give the award to "Man on Wire" now, we can save some time during the Academy Awards ceremony later. The nominees for Best Documentary Feature are:

Man on Wire

Trouble the Water

Dark Knight will obviously get nominated and win but the competition isn't that tough either.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs wasn't nominated for BP.

well, it's quite apocalpytic to say they'll be cancelled for not nominating a particular movie...true, they're ratings would probably double if they nominated DK, but even if they don't, their ratings are still very high every year, even if they consistently drop. if they continue to descend over the next 10-15 years, THEN maybe they'll be cancelled from TV programming...although they'll still have an awards show, if for no other reason than Hollywood's desire to masturbate itself.

Still good to see it's been nominated for best picture for this award show ... really any award show, with any justice!

If the Dark Knight isn't nominated for Best Picture, the oscars will be cancelled next year. The one possible thing that could bring in viewers and they may blow it. Also people will just continue their view of them wankers picking the most politically correct films, and films with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in. Always the same!

those 5 flicks have been my personal predictions for the Oscars for several months now. it's a solid list...let's see if the Academy does the same.
