Mel Gibson Regrets Not Saving Heath Ledger558

Mel Gibson spoke to Jimmy Kimmel on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" about how he was able to help Britney Spears, adding that he regrets not reaching out to Heath Ledger in a similar fashion.

"She's a nice kid," Gibson said about Spears. "She was just going through a rough patch. You see kids like that in the industry. I just thought, 'I wonder if anyone is reaching out to her,' so I just called her and she's doing great now."

And he wishes he could've done the same with Ledger. "I shoulda called him years before," said Gibson. "I really didn't know the ins and outs of what was up with him, but I don't believe it was just an accident."

Ledger won for Best Supporting Actor last night. His family accepted the award on behalf of his young daughter Matilda.
