Never pigeonhole an actor. They’re out there writing, producing and directing, creating clothing lines, volunteering on political campaigns and charitable organizations. Yet it’s rare that actors—especially established ones—reverse roles with the pesky journalists who are always sticking microphones in their faces, trying to dig for the next big scoop.
Enter Natalie Portman to do just that. Along with her friend and business partner Christine Aylward, the “Star Wars” actress has launched MakingOf.com, a website that seeks to give people an inside look at the process of making movies through interviews with the insiders themselves: actors, directors, cinematographers, editors, makeup artists and more.
The idea, Portman explained to MTV News, began with a simple conversation one night between Aylward and herself. Portman said she wondered, “Why isn’t there a centralized resource for people who are interested in film to go and find out how things are done?”
After much development, they launched MakingOf earlier this week. They already have some impressive, compelling video content up: interviews with directors Ron Howard and Michel Gondry and actors Jason Bateman, John Krasinski and Billy Bob Thornton. During the Tribeca Film Festival, they’ll also be talking to casts and crews from the various movies.
“It’s online film school,” explained Aylward. “Also [it’s] taking consumers and bringing them into the moviemaking process. Anyone who’s curious about what goes into making a movie, anyone who loves movies will find something on the site.”
Count Portman among them. One of the reasons she wanted to create the site was her burgeoning interest in directing. “[D]irecting a little bit—I’ve only done a couple shorts—was definitely part of the impetus for me to want to start something like this, because there were so many questions that I had,” she explained. “I’m lucky in that I can call up directors and be like, ‘What does this mean?’”
Who might she want to interview in the future? “People I admire—like Emma Thompson—who are people I look to as personal heroes and role models,” Portman told us.
Sitting down face-to-face with Hollywood talent will be that much easier since she moved recently from New York City to the West Coast. “It’s nice to be in my community,” she said. “I think I always shied away from it and wanted to preserve some outsiderness. But I think it’s really nice to be around [a] nice creative community. And it’s just nice to be near nature. Which is funny to say—it’s still a city—but it’s much more trees and hiking and that kind of thing, which I was missing.”
