Actress Samantha Morton has revealed she was convicted of making threats to kill as a teenager.
During a riot at a Nottingham care home, Morton used a knife to scare an older girl who she says bullied her.
The actress told The Guardian newspaper: "I was physically abused and I retaliated." She added:"the only person I hurt in the end was myself."
Morton, who was sentenced to 18 weeks in an attendance centre, says the events "embarrassed" and "humbled" her.
Morton explained to the paper that the children's home was on fire and police were already on the scene when she picked up the knife and threatened to kill the girl.
'Ashamed'
The actress said: "I didn't touch her - wouldn't have touched her - but the police restrained and then arrested me.
"I was locked in a cell for three days. It was terrible. I just sat there thinking, I don't want this life - I'm not a petty criminal. I'm not a thug. I was so ashamed of myself" the actress added.
Morton was charged with attempted murder but after the case went to youth, then crown courts, she was convicted of the lesser charge of making threats to kill.
The conviction has had an impact on her adult life as she has had difficulties in getting visas to film in America
