The cast of Guy Ritchie's new Sherlock Holmes movie were given a real sense of life in Victorian England - where the film is set - they were covered in "sludge" from the era.
Actress Rachel McAdams recalls one shoot in a real Victorian dungeon really recreated the sights and smells of bygone years for herself and co-stars Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law.
She tells WENN, "At one point we were in a dungeon where they had shipped the convicts off to Australia through these underground tunnels.
"We were shooting down there and we all had this white paint on our backs and everyone was like, 'Did the painters just paint this morning?’ But then we were told, 'That’s Victorian sludge! It’s the real thing.'
"The walls were just dripping with it."
But The Notebook star insists it wasn't all sludge and bad smells as she revisited Victorian times: "It was also big grandiose sets and stunning costumes in head-to-toe satin. There were corsets and all this fun stuff."
