Celeb Makeovers We'd Like to See
As 'What Not to Wear' takes on Mayim Bialik, we run down other celebs we'd like to see made over on the show
TLC's makeover show "What Not to Wear" kicks off its new season by taking on its first celebrity, a '90s icon who's still stuck in
... morethe '90s. Mayim Bialik (pictured, at right), better known as the title character from the TV series "Blossom," has reluctantly signed up for the wardrobe renewal after claiming that people harass her on the street for her frumpy look! Since her time on "Blossom," Bialik's made hilarious appearances all over TV: as Larry David's lesbian neighbor in "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and even playing herself on Kirstie Alley's short-lived series "Fat Actress." And although we'd be more than slightly upset if hosts Stacy and Clinton attempted to remove any floral dresses, Dr. Martens or bucket hats from Bialik's closet, it's understandable that the now-33-year-old mother of two, who, post-"Blossom," attended UCLA and got her Ph.D., might need a wardrobe upgrade into the 21st century.
We're rooting for Bialik, because Blossom's quirky look and fun style epitomized the mid-'90s. She encouraged young girls to embrace their inner flower child -- paired with a funky jean jacket and colorful Docs, of course. But "What Not to Wear" has plenty of celebs that it could take on. Bialik's not the only former teen star that could use a makeover, of course. That's why we're using this opportunity to suggest the Blossom route to a few other aging fashion icons. Some still live in the past, like Bialik. We'd desperately like to see some other return to the time of their fame, perhaps to get some style advice from their characters?
SOME HIGHLIGHTS:
Jared Leto
Who could forget the dreamiest Kurt Cobain clone, who indifferently broke high school hearts, while managing to pull off plaid? We're obviously referring to Jordan Catalano from "My So-Called Life." While only on for one deeply-dramatic season, Leto's grungy heartthrob
... more status on the show not only stuck with the actor, but also influenced much of the teen television that followed. Leto's style helped define an era of casual-cool: dark plaids, dirty jeans and long hair -- a time when it was uncool to shower. Nowadays, Leto is more goth than grunge, and while the look might work for him onstage as the lead singer and guitarist for 30 Seconds to Mars, perhaps it's our own nostalgia for the hallways of Liberty High, a Sonic Youth soundtrack and the Angela Chase voice-over that prevents us from getting on board with his new look. If I had my way, Leto would be back in plaid and inviting me to the junior prom.
Maureen McCormick
The epitome of '70s spirit and style, Marcia (Marcia, Marcia!) Brady, played by Maureen McCormick, was not only the most popular girl in school during her own era, but could totally fit in with today's vintage lifestyle. With stick-straight blond hair, the
... moregrooviest dress, and crisp blue bell bottoms, millions of teens copied Marcia's style, which today fetches premium prices in thrift stores. These days, McCormick doesn't quite rock the platforms anymore, and, honestly, who would expect her to? She appeared on "Celebrity Fit Club" in 2007, losing 34 pounds and even winning the entire contest. Whatever happens, we think McCormick would fare wonderfully on "What Not to Wear," freshening up her fashions and keeping Jan jealous for all eternity.
Mark-Paul Gosselaar
Aside from predicting the future (let's not forget the classic oversized cell phone), the actor who played Zack Morris on "Saved by the Bell" was Bayside's resident heartthrob and a surprising fashion trendsetter. Mark-Paul Gosselaar played the sweet-talking
... more schemer, whose preppy style got him mocked by the jocks (I'm looking at you, Mario Lopez) but adored by the entire female population of Bayside. And while the "Saved by the Bell" girls donned high waist lines, cropped torso tees and even Lisa Turtle's famous animals prints, Zack managed to get away with stonewashed denim, oversized sweaters and even quite a few pastels, remaining perfectly stylish and totally '80s. Gosselaar's successful transition from child star to full-fledged adult actor happened after a few made-for-TV movies and a spot on the gritty cop drama "NYPD Blue." Since then he's abandoned his blond locks and currently stars as a lawyer on TNT's "Raising the Bar." But an uproar arose from Bayside's biggest fans, who begged Gosselaar to cut his hair, which he wore long during the show's first season. And even though he finally did, without an appearance on "What Not to Wear," we still long for our '80s icon.
Joaquin Phoenix
We know we're not the first to say this, but what is going on with Joaquin Phoenix? If anyone needs to be told "What Not to Wear" (or in this case, rap), it's the mysterious Oscar-nominated actor-turned-rapper. The confusion of his newfound hip-hop career aside,
... more Phoenix's former self happened to be a dreamy child star who was part of the famed Phoenix clan. The hippie siblings were all involved in showbiz in one way or another, and Joaquin broke out as the hunky Commodus in 2000's "Gladiator." He embodied the spirit of Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line" and was poised for further success until a recent decision to not groom and to perform hip-hop seriously confused his legions of fans. Stacey and Clinton would have quite the challenge on their hands with this one.
Mischa Barton
Although it can be hard to remember back to a time without Lauren Conrad, rich kid drama on TV certainly didn't start with "The Hills." Arguably beginning with "Beverly Hills, 90210," it made a huge comeback with 2003's "The OC," and LC's predecessor came in the
... moreform of Orange County's poor little rich girl, Marissa Cooper, played by newcomer Mischa Barton. Barton's classic California girl style fit perfectly with the show's emphasis on sun, surf and snobbery. After deciding to leave "The OC" for Hollywood, not only did Barton's career plummet, but her sense of style did as well. Was it that she lost her "OC"-sanctioned stylist? Or maybe the modelesque actress decided to embrace her own unique sense of fashion. Either way, Barton has been continually bashed on her wardrobe (and film) choices ever since she left the show that made her famous. Ironically (or not), Barton's next starring role is on the CW's "Beautiful Life," playing a bitchy model. Will she pick up some tips from the fashion industry this way? Or does she need to be the next celebrity featured on "What Not to Wear"?
