Guillermo del Toro was a guest on BBC radio where he talked about "The Hobbit" prequels, including some casting news and whether there will be a "bridge film." [via /Film]

"There is a whole other chapter, so to speak, which is the comings and going of Gandalf which are dealt with," he explained. "People that know the lore know that Gandalf was delayed with a crisis... with a character that is very shady called the Necromancer that proves to be Sauron."

When asked if Andy Serkis will return, Del Toro replied: "Yes [and] Ian McKellen is back, [and] Hugo Weaving in the roles they originated in the trilogy."

Regarding Smaug, Del Toro revealed that after eight months of design work, they have just "cracked the basic engineering." He thinks that they will need another six or seven months before Smaug will be ready.

Frankly, the most important question will be: Who plays Bilbo Baggins? This will be critical to the success of the film.

I would like to see a HOBBIT movie using the same type of casting that was done in LOTR, making it the important piece it is come to life. The past few movies I have seen on the Hobbit have been quite tame. It deserves it's own niche, and it's own following of fans. I for one, will be glad to see it if given the credence it deserves. Set in the same area as LOTR, it could bring another box-office smash to theatres if cast as well. Ian Mclelland and Hugo Weaving bring some much needed intensity to the screen. With today's technology, Smaug can become a terror that strikes fear into the hearts of movie-goers and fans of just the right sort. And the world needs another pint-sized hero in Bilbo Baggins.
