Iron Man 2 will be a "self-contained film", according to director Jon Favreau.
The helmer said that the upcoming sequel's plotline will not be left open for a possible Avengers resolution.
He told MTV: "We're working towards Avengers, but by the same token we want to resolve this film and make [Iron Man 2] play on its own. It's not a serial. It's a self-contained film."
Favreau added that the superhero movie will be "a complete tale", while the forthcoming Thor and Captain America projects will work in tandem with the Iron Man follow-up.
It was reported earlier that the filmmaker confirmed that there will be a third instalment in the saga.
Iron Man 2 will be released in cinemas on May 7, 2010.
