'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs' Shines Brightly In The Sunday Box Office Report

1. "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs" ($24.6 million)
2. "Surrogates" ($15 million)
3. "Fame" ($10 million)
4. "The Informant!" ($6.9 million)
5. "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" ($4.7 million)

Moviegoers on the American east coast woke up to both a literal downpour of rain as well as an irrefutable onslaught of oh-so-delicious "Meatballs." The Sony Pictures Animation film easily won the box office for its second weekend in a row with a $24.6 million intake, resulting in a total of $60 million since its debut last weekend.

As a result, the Disney-produced "Surrogates," the adaptation of the Top Shelf Productions graphic novel, underperformed significantly. "Surrogates" managed a second place finish at $15 million, a severely disappointing intake given the film's $80 million budget and heavy marketing campaign. It's also surprising given the close gap between "Surrogates" and "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" going into Saturday morning -- "Meatballs" was leading the Bruce Willis-starring film by less than $1 million, but still managed to beat the newcomer by almost $10 million by weekend's conclusion.

"Fame" was another film that underperformed with only $10 million over the weekend, disappointing considering the film's family-friendly nature and its $25 million budget. Still, "Fame" can blame "Meatballs" for its lack of success, as it appears the two movies competed for the same audience -- Variety notes that "Fame's" audience was 55% under 25, undoubtedly the same age group that "Meatballs" successfully targeted.

Rounding out the fourth and fifth spots are "The Informant!" and Tyler Perry's "I Can Do Bad All By Myself," which earned $6.9 million and $4.7 million, respectively. The Matt Damon-starring movie is well on track to recoup its budget within the next week, while Perry's film continues to pull in good business.

In fact, Perry managed to undercut "Pandorum," the Cam Gigandet-starring horror flick that was in fifth place as of Friday evening. The space-set "Pandorum" only managed a less-than-thrilling $4.4 million over the course of the weekend.

Did you get a heaping plate of "Meatballs" this weekend, or did you turn out for one of the new releases like "Surrogates" or "Fame" instead? What movies are you looking forward to next weekend? Let us know in the comments section or on Twitter!
