Fans of the cop drama 'Southland' are up in arms over NBC's cancellation of the show, which garnered strong reviews but didn't, apparently, have high enough ratings to survive the 'Jay Leno Show' juggernaut.
But hope may be on the horizon for the boys in blue. The Los Angeles Times reports that the people behind 'Southland' are actively shopping it around, hoping that some other network will take a chance on a show considered too "gritty" for a 9PM time slot on NBC.
And what other network might that be? All signs point to TNT, the cable network owned by Time Warner (which also owns 'Southland' production company Warner Bros.). The network that Ted Turner built has ventured into original programming recently and had a hit with 'The Closer,' but could use another success. Six episodes of 'Southland' are already filmed and ready to go, so costs at the outset for TNT would be minimal.
As for other networks, the L.A. Times piece runs down the other options, but none seems quite as likely as TNT (A&E, for example, has already passed; and FX might not find the show gritty enough).
Meanwhile, 'Southland' fans will simply have to cross their fingers in anticipation ... and maybe start hounding TNT executives with a "buy our show" campaign. Does someone want to make a run on plastic toy badges?
