Joe D'Amato (aka Aristide Massaccesi) (1936 - 1999)

  • Caption: Joe D'Amato (aka Aristide Massaccesi) (1936 - 1999)
  • Description: Italian director, cinematographer and producer, and hugely prolific – if not hugely talented – exploitation merchant. Began his career as a director of photography, a job which he continued on a variety of Italian films into the mid-seventies, including the Roger Corman-produced The Arena, much of which he also directed. In 1975 he adopted the name Joe D’Amato, under which he’d become internationally known. As D’Amato, he made a B-movie star of Laura Gemser with tropical sexploiters such as Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals, Emanuelle in Bangkok, Erotic Nights of the Living Dead and Black Cobra.

Horror fans best know Massaccesi/D’Amato for his early eighties gore flicks Beyond the Darkness (aka Buio Omega), Anthrophageous and its sequel Absurd, and for producing Michele Soavi’s seminal slasher Stage Fright. But his massive filmography also includes the Conan-'inspired' Ator movies, futuristic actioners (Endgame), erotic dramas (Eleven Days, Eleven Nights), hardcore porno flicks and any number of sleazy quickies, directed under a bewildering array of pseudonyms. Continued to direct up until his death from a heart attack in 1999.
