Monica Calhoun began her acting career as a child in Percy Adlon’s sleeper hit Baghdad Café (1988) and then followed with the family tale Jack in the Bear (1993), starring Danny DeVito. Since then, she has appeared in a number of feature films, including Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), starring Whoopi Goldberg, as well as The Player’s Club (1998), starring Ice Cube and Bernie Mac.
In addition, Calhoun landed a lead role in The Best Man (1999) produced by Spike Lee as well as a role in Love and Basketball (2000), which was directed by Spike Lee. In this film, she starred alongside Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan. Her most recent work includes Trois 2: Pandora’s Box (2002) followed by three other films soon to hit theaters, Outside Looking In (2003), Civil Brand (2003) featuring Mos Def and last, but not least, she has a lead role in a Jean Claude LaMarre film, Gang of Roses (2003).
Moreover, Calhoun’s independent film credits include Taking a Stand, The Friends, and Park Day. In addition, Calhoun starred in 10 films made for television, including the Ditch Digger’s Daughters, Rebound, What About Your Friends, The Ernest Green Story, Pacific Station, She Stood Alone, Getting Straight, Children of the Night and Different Worlds.
She has also appeared as a guest star in a number of popular television series, including Good News, The Wayans Brothers, A Different World, Where I Live, and the television spin-off of her early feature, Baghdad Café.
