  • Description: River Phoenix’s next project, as marine Edward Baines Birdlace in “Dogfight”, has been labeled by many as arguably his best ever acting performance. The movie’s producers were worried that River’s new buzzcut hair style would alienate him from his hordes of teenage girl fans but his believable performance as a marine more than overcame their concerns.

    The movie had Birdlace winning the charms of the ugliest girl in town and bringing her to a party to celebrate the marines’ last night before being shipped out to Vietnam. The unconventional storyline was not actually a love story (though Birdlace does fall in love with the girl) but concentrates more on how the marines’ experiences in Vietnam affected them.
