    In June of 1988, with Arlyn Phoenix now taking over the reins as manager of her actor children (all Phoenix siblings were now in the movie business), the whole family withdrew from the Hollywood scene. They moved house to Florida where they had a home built in Micanopy, just south of Gainesville in Florida where the compound quickly became known as Camp Phoenix. However, River soon moved out of his family abode and purchased a property in Gainesville itself. It was here that River’s musical ambitions were to be realized and it was where he was to meet his new lover Suzanne Solgot.

    River was now no longer a child star, no longer able to play teen-throb roles, but was at the awkward age of not quite being able to land the adult leading man role. His next job was an offbeat one, that of a young man with Eastern philosophies with a mixed-up outlook on life in general. He was Devo Nod in “I Love You To Death”, a very black comedy about several attempts to kill a womanizing husband, played by Kevin Kline. Devo was the central character who arranged to have two drug crazed hit men (one of whom was Keanu Reeves) murders the husband, on instructions from his wife (Tracy Ullman) and his mother-in-law. Again, the beliefs of River’s on-screen character were not dissimilar to his own beliefs of saving the earth, rain forests, etc.

    The movie was not received too favourably, possibly because many critics found the subject of murdering a man just too distasteful, even for a black comedy/farce.
