Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

Rupert Sanders has done a brilliant job here, not only in the style, which I really liked, but he drained performances from his actors brilliantly. On good form is Kristen Stewart who firstly does okay with a British accent and secondly delivers a strong enough performance to carry the film. Its a welcome change to see her playing a strong female character. Charlize Theron steals the show with her stunning face and deliciously evil performance. The only real let down is Chris Hemsworth who delivers a forgettable performance with a not so forgettable dodgy Scottish accent. It's not perfect though, with a much stronger second half than first you will struggle to recall the opening 40 minutes, and the pacing is up and down throughout. It's a pretty film though, the cinematography is lovely, and while it won't be remembered at the end of the year, it's certainly a decent trip to the cinema this summer.

The Dictator was always going to try to be slightly offensive, it works for Sacha Baron Cohen, it's just a shame that in among this offensive taste they forgot the comedy. Some of the jokes are very hit and miss and regardless of how offensive and crude they are, some of them just fall flat on their face, the best you may get is a chuckle. As for the story, it's a strange one, firstly it's incredibly self aware of how outrageous it actually is, and this helps. What doesn't help is the silly love story it tries to pass off, its a bit predictable and strange. More Bruno than Borat.

The Raid: Redemption (2012)

The Raid has been gaining rave reviews throughout the early part of this year, it became this 5 star extravaganza that had to be seen, it is however not a perfect 5 star film. The fights are impressive, there is no denying that the action on display in this film is some of the best seen this year on screen and it's absolutely the talking point of the film. In among all the action its easy to forget that it's actually an okay story, arguably better than many other action film this year, with believable characters and motives its easy to start rooting for the good guys and booing the bad ones. Just don't expect too many developments along the way, because once the action starts, it rarely takes a moment to stop. The Raid is an exhausting experience, it will make you tense and sweaty, but in the best way possible, go and see it!

Hesher tries desperately hard to be alternative that it forgets about the story along the way, whether intentional or not, the character of Hesher is so backwards that by the end you do tend to question and not believe his redeeming moments which is a bit of a problem for me. I can't fault the acting, Gordon Levitt is always a delight to watch regardless of his character and he has a good rapport with Brochu in this film. It's got moments where it tries to be Little Miss Sunshine and then it has moments where it tries to be something a bit moodier, the two don't blend well and end up making a rather average film.
