The Shining (1980)
Wanted to see this for a long time, and whilst I can say it's… More
Wanted to see this for a long time, and whilst I can say it's definitely worth watching, especially for horror/thriller/Nicholson fans, it wasn't as good as the hype has suggested. Yes it was a great movie with great performances from Nicholson and Lloyd, Duvall really got on my nerves and almost ruined the film. She was pathetic, whiny and dangerous and at times her acting is really awful. Another few issues I have is that by the end it's not entirely clear what really happened, I would have liked more of an explanation to the hotel or Jack's and Danny's behaviour. As the film went on, there were a few times when I just felt 'get on with it' and wanted it to be the end. Saying this, I really enjoyed the maze sequences (the actual maze and Danny on his tricycle) and the cinematography was great.

Hitchcock is most certainly a master of his art. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and despite the fact that I have seen the loose remake Disturbia, I was completely involved in the story and couldn't always guess what was going to happen. Fantastic performances from everyone and I really love the set. There's so much atmosphere in that first shot looking around all the flats and it tells so much. I believe that everyone creeps at some point in their lives, but this is exciting and fully rounded off. There's so much I love about this film and it is most certainly one of my favourites of Hitchcock.

Archipelago (2010)

This is definitely something more reserved for the 'higher-thinkers' or 'artists' amongst us. I appreciate what the director intended to do and what she has done, however for me personally, it didn't make a great film. I didn't really like any of the characters too much (except Edward and Rose) and when, towards the end of the film, I see a close up of one of the main characters and don't recognize her, there's a problem. I presume the constant static wide and long shots that capture the whole scene rather than cutting between different shots is supposed to represent some sort of fly on the wall Italian neorealism but I just didn't like it. At times it as great and really fueled the tension and awkwardness of what was happening, but at other times I almost screamed for closer shots. Not something I'd watch or even mention again.

I definitely understand why people love this, it's a eerily realistic showing of a young couple falling in love juxtaposed to their subsequent falling out of love. Performances are top notch from the main two but for some reason I just didn't really like either character. Both of them came across quite badly and I didn't sympathize with anyone other than the child. I don't know if it's because I see similarities in my own life or just because it didn't hit very hard or if it's something entirely different. It's definitely worth watching, but not if you want to feel good once the credits role.
