The pacing of the film moves at a snails pace. There is a lot of repetitiveness: cotton picking, singing, brutality, more cotton picking, more singing, more brutality. It's mostly during the middle of the film when it starts to drag and it never picks up momentum. It really makes this two hour film feel like five hours.
Some of the characterization is questionable. I'd say Solomon is alright but he kind of seems to be on the sidelines despite being a main character; I found it difficult to care or root for him. Paul Dano is over the top as usual; I'm starting to get annoyed with him as an actor. Brad Pitt has very limited screen time but when he is on screen he seems to be trying too hard. Michael Fassbender's character is the typical insanely evil villain that yells and screams too much... yet he never intimidated me.
Some of the dialogue is pretty bad and the camera work could have been better; too many close-up shots. Also, the editing felt sloppy at times especially with the awkward flashbacks. I think if some dialogue and technical aspects were improved, I would have been more engaged. Instead they took me out of the movie.
12 Years a Slave could have been a masterpiece but instead it's a mediocre slave movie with a dull story and a lazy ending. Some of the acting is good, some not, but no character I felt connected to. I can't recommend this film due to how boring it is.

It could have been hilarious but is instead dragged down by unfunny (and staged?) scenes as well as a boring story. Don't waste your money on this film or just avoid seeing it all, really.
