I absolutely loved this movie although my wife was reduced to screaming impotently at the televsion. It got to me in a way that only a half dozen movies have gotten me and I'm in my mid 50's and have seen a lot of movies. I can see how some could find it boring, and if you want real action go see one of the Jaws movies, not this, which makes Hitchcock movies look like slasher pix. I thought the movie would have been far better with fewer sharks and maybe some hypothermia/dehydration induced hallucinations instead. Yes the characters are not all that well developed but that allowed me to see myself, and my wife in them, and boy did I ever. If I had to compare this to another theatrical production it would not be Jaws but rather K2 which is about 2 men on a ledge after an accident in the Himalayas. Personally I wonder if one of the reasons people hate it is that what they label boredom is just hidden terror at the idea of spending endless hours floating in the ocean with the one you love getting to see you at your very worst. How much more comforting to have some action. After all isn't the reason kills herself at the end that she can't take it any more either? It also put me in mind of Johny Got His Gun, made in the very late 60s, which is about the inner workings of a man who has lost his legs, arms, and face in WWI, and was the 2nd most disturbing movie I have ever seen. This one at least I could watch several times. Johny Got His Gun I wouldn't watch again for money or sex. Anyway if you want to see something that may make you wonder about how you and your SO take each other for granted and how you would treat each other in this type situation, get the DVD. If you want action save your money and go outside to watch the grass grow.
