My Favorite Movies

  adinb's Rating My Rating
1
Blade Runner (1982,  R)
Blade Runner
The Classic Cyberpunk movie. The takeoff from Philip K Dick's story is only so-so, but the film's characters and story stands on its own. Highly recommended for the dark futurism and spectacular use of effects available in 1982.
2
V for Vendetta (2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
Incredible adaptation of the graphic novel. I was scared that the Wachowski Bros. would drop the storyline in the detention center, but much to my delight, it became a centerpiece of the movie.

I'm absolutely blown away by Portman's & Weaving's performances. Weaving brings so much to the character without ever being able to see his face.
3
Dogma (1999,  R)
Dogma
Kevin Smith on Religion! Great dialougue with clever satire/commentary on today's organized religions.
4
Highlander (1986,  R)
Highlander
The classic adventure that asks the eternal question: "Who wants to live forever?"

Too bad all the followup movies had none of the heart or class of this movie.
5
The Fountain (2006,  PG-13)
The Fountain
Well adapted from the graphic novel. The changes to the storyline are somewhat controversial, though they clarify some fuzzy parts of the original book. This movie touches my heart and the semi-open ending creates lots of good conversations.

Touching...not your standard hollywood fare. And the special effects using oil emulsion blow me away!
6
Pitch Black (2000,  R)
Pitch Black
This movie came out of nowhere to become my favorite sci fi "chase" movie ever. The simplicity of the universe and storyline allows the viewer to concentrate on the interplay between characters. This movie was an absolute blast, and a breath of fresh air.

I just wish that Chronicles of Riddick hadn't tried so hard to fit 3 movies worth of universe and story into one muddled movie.
7
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968,  G)
2001: A Space Odyssey
A classic that stands in a category of its own. Typical Kubrick pacing, but if you're up for a beautiful movie with slow moments, you can't do any better.

The parent of almost all modern scifi!
8
Aliens (1986,  R)
Aliens
Tense and Dark...with some of the best one-liners of any movie!

This is one of the few sequels that lives up to the original movie, and in many ways surpasses it. The emphasis is on the characters and not on creating some overwhelming muddle of a universe.
9
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys) (1995,  R)
10
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964,  PG)
11
Natural Born Killers (1994,  NC-17)
Natural Born Killers
I saw this movie on the same day I finished Survival school. That probably wasn't a good idea--half my class was afraid that I would come out of the movie as a mass murderer.

I obviously came out fine, the trippy visuals and twisted storyline amused me more than anything else.

A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989,  PG)
35
The Matrix (1999,  R)
36
Serenity (2005,  PG-13)
Serenity
As time goes on and I catch up on all the TV episodes, I find more and more genius hidden in this gem. This is one of the few movies that I enjoy watching over and over.
37
Scorchers (1991,  R)
38
Suicide Kings (1997,  R)
39
Hawks (1988,  R)
40
Hero (2004,  PG-13)
Hero
Beautiful use of colors, classic Chinese storyline. You can watch it again and again and find something new every time.
41
300 (2007,  R)
300
I lovr the visuals--they hit a primitive place viscerally.

They change the historical events (sometimes to the detriment of the story), but the movie does an incredible job of capturing the primitve *feel* of battle.
42
Kalifornia (1993,  R)
Kalifornia
I love this movie--the interplay between the characters is "killer", even the chemistry between "crazy" Pitt and Duchovny. A classic psychological thriller in my book
43
Falling Down (1993,  R)
Falling Down
The best "snapping" movie of all time. I have to pull this one out every now and then to rewatch it. A masterpiece in its own way, though obviously not the epitome of film as art
44
The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
wow. an incredible movie that transcends the "superhero" movie genre. Heath Ledger's performance was absolutely brilliant. But beware, this movie is *long*.
