Kenneth Anger's Scorpio Rising is a brilliant depiction of youth and culture that manages to not exploit and to show how amazing and beautiful it is to be young.

16
Fanny och Alexander (Fanny and Alexander) (1982,  R)
Fanny och Alexander (Fanny and Alexander)
This film affected me in a deeper way than I thought it would. The abuse of the little boy in the first half of the film deeply disturbed me, but the second half of the film manages to be equally shattering. A must-see.
17
Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985,  R)
Kiss of the Spider Woman
Somehow it manages to be a political thriller, a film-noir, and a gay themed prison film and succeeds in every way.
18
Rope (1948,  PG)
Rope
A masterpiece of suspense. Alfred Hitchcock's greatest film.
19
Martin (1977,  R)
Martin
Martin is a monster, but he is so beautiful and sympathetic and strong. Whether or not he is a vampire, to me, is irrelevant. I just wish all films about serial killers could depict then in such a honest and humane light as this one does, even though he might just be a vampire. The fact is, he is just an average man who just wants what everyone else wants. To see him be normal and then see him at once turn into a cannibalistic beat is terrifying and captivating.
20
Triumph of the Will (Triumph des Willens) (,  Unrated)
Triumph of the Will (Triumph des Willens)
Just see it. It's insane.
21
Black Christmas (1974,  R)
Black Christmas
One of the scariest and most depressing and bleak films ever made. The fact that it takes place during such a happy time of year only makes it all the more grotesque. Canada can make great horror films.
22
The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976,  R)
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Deeply depressing, but incredibly glorious, horrific, and touching. I have always loved The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Ran
A true tragedy, to be sure, but one that always manages to get me in a tremendously deep way.
24
Dead Ringers (1988,  R)
Dead Ringers
Jeremy Irons is one of the scariest people ever, and I have this film to blame for this opinion. This is a deeply twisted, haunting, and gripping masterpiece of macabre horror and suspense and stark reality.
25
Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht (Nosferatu the Vampyre) (1979,  PG)
Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht (Nosferatu the Vampyre)
The original was a masterpiece of horror, but somehow this film manages to be even more enchanting in even more ways than the original was. This is perhaps my all time favorite retelling of Dracula! This film has everything and it manages to just be scary as hell in a way that isn't obvious. It really is one of the best horror films ever made.

This film scared me and shocked me on a level much more personal to me than any other horror film.
31
Invincible (2002,  PG-13)
Invincible
Werner Herzog has returned and has now directed one of the greatest films of all time. INVINCIBLE is one of the most beautiful and uplifting films I have ever seen in my entire life. It's like a celebration of what made all of his previous films so glorious. It's a celebration of life, love, youth, the human body, the human mind, dreams, and pride. The film's ending is heartbreaking, moving, uplifting, and deeply disturbing all at the same time. The performances of Tim Roth and Jouko Ahola are absolutely perfect. Tim Roth is captivating and creepy, yet understandably so and simply so, Jouko Ahola seems so uncomplicated, uncorrupted, and good natured that his presence feels so completely pure and loving in every frame that he is in. The film's pacing is slow, but not slow enough to bore. The film gradually dissects itself as it goes along and the best part about it is that it is so utterly unpredictable and so accessible in so many ways. I care not for what critics and audiences have to say. INVINCIBLE is one of the greatest films ever made and it is just as good as Werner Herzog's previous masterpieces.

The Iron Giant
One of the greatest animated films of all time!
39
Being John Malkovich (1999,  R)
Being John Malkovich
Hilarious and extremely dark film. The film just gets crazier and more grotesque, but it always stays interesting, entertaining, and fun to watch. The ending raises many philosophical questions and makes you think. In addition to all this, the film made me develop more of an interest in the art of being a puppeteer.

The third best Kurosawa film.
51
The Panic in Needle Park (1971,  PG)
The Panic in Needle Park
One of the most harrowing films I've ever seen. The aspect of drug addiction is depicted so realistically here, but the relationship between the two main characters is also one of the most realistic depictions of love and relationships that I think most people will ever come across. One of Al Pacino's finest performances.

Faust
F.W. Murnau's greatest film, by far.
62
Window Water Baby Moving (1962,  Unrated)
Window Water Baby Moving
This film made me cry. There was no sound, just imagery of a baby being born to the parents of Stan Brakhage and his wife. The love and emotion that you can see in their faces and in the frames is just simply astonishing. It's one of the most amazing portraits of human life and human emotion I've seen.

Jigokumon (Gate of Hell)

Eyes Without a Face
One of the best French horror films that you will EVER come across.
74
Bad Boy Bubby (1993,  Unrated)
Bad Boy Bubby
A seriously demented piece of filmmaking. It's like a deranged combination of BLAST FROM THE PAST, GUMMO, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, and EL TOPO. Sometimes I wonder if people who make these kinds of films should be jailed. I cannot deny it, however. I adore everything about this film.
75
Magic (1978,  R)
Magic
Scariest puppet film ever.
76
Hoop Dreams (1994,  PG-13)

78
La Plančte Sauvage (The Savage Planet) (The Fantastic Planet) (Planet of Incredible Creatures) (1999,  PG)
La Plančte Sauvage (The Savage Planet) (The Fantastic Planet) (Planet of Incredible Creatures)
Incredibly insightful and inspirational work of art. This film really represents everything that is wrong with science fiction films today. Thank goodness that we have people, such as the makers of FANTASTIC PLANET, that will always be able to leave us spellbound by their work. This film is simply a pure work of art that should be required viewing by everyone on the face of the earth.
79
Lord of the Flies (1963,  Unrated)
Lord of the Flies
Such a chilling masterpiece. It holds up so strongly even today and the whole atmosphere of it seems all too common and realistic.
80
Undertow (2004,  R)
Undertow
A masterpiece of suspense, surrealism, and childhood adventure. If Dario Argento directed Night of the Hunter, it would probably be kind of like this.
81
Dancer in the Dark (2000,  R)
Dancer in the Dark
Perhaps one of the most original and daring films I've seen. It's a love-it or hate-it film for sure. Either you get into the soap opera plot or you don't. For me, it worked beautifully and I think this is Von Trier's best film for sure.

Titicut Follies
One of the most unsettling films you will ever see! I guarantee it!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles
A perfect balance of humor and seriousness. A beautiful film.
86
Fitzcarraldo (1982,  PG)
Fitzcarraldo
I can't even understand how this film was even possible to be made. The whole idea just seems so ambitious in such an extreme way. Sometimes there are just some films that are impossible to wrap your head around and this is one. Regardless of all that, however, this film was just a masterpiece and I will never see anything like it!
87
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God) (1972,  Unrated)
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God)
One of Werner Herzog's most disturbing films, and also one of his craziest and most insane and greatest! It's very documentary-like and it challenges the viewer in a very unique way. Just see it. You won't regret it.
88

89
Kumonosu Jô (Throne of Blood) (Macbeth) (1957,  Unrated)
Kumonosu Jô (Throne of Blood) (Macbeth)
It's like watching the Psycho shower scene on repeat! So extreme and horrifying and messy, but so brilliant.
90
Stroszek (1977,  Unrated)
Stroszek
Oh Bruno Stroszek what a life you have! It really made me feel so terrible about life in general. It's such a sad film, and yet it has an uncommon sense of simplicity that makes it all the more affecting and hard-hitting. The ending is perhaps one of the greatest endings to a film I have ever seen. It's so triumphant in such a bizarre way. Just see this film! You won't see anything else like it! You might not like it when it ends, but the more you think about it the more it WILL grow on you!
91
Ŕ l'intérieur (Inside) (2007,  Unrated)
Ŕ l'intérieur (Inside)
THIS film is impossible to forget. It's one of the goriest films I have ever seen, and one of the most horrifying. If you want to see a truly deeply sick, fucked up, shocking, gorefest of a horror film, this is the one to see! Also it's only 80 minutes long, so it's short, sweet, and to the point. It'll make you scream, it'll make you cry, and it will make you cringe.
92
Gimme Shelter (1970,  R)
Gimme Shelter
My favorite rock and roll documentary of all time. The imagery in this will forever haunt me. Deeply disturbing and brilliantly realized!
