Star Trek - PG-13 Very solidly well-done. I think non-Trek fans will certainly enjoy. Trek fans will enjoy to the extent that their minds are open and ready for the next iteration. The franchise has been through bigger changes before this one, to be sure.

Casting was perfect, and the scene-to-scene character interactions were very well scripted. Almost like watching Lost.

The larger plot was a little uninteresting, but it was almost an afterthought. The origin stories of the characters we know and love make up most of the plot action. The bad guy who wants to destroy the universe, starting with kittens, is almost perfunctory.

The film has an incredible amount to get done in 126 minutes: take every Star Trek character you know from infancy to the beloved icon you remember, with a twist. Get people from enlisting in Star Fleet to the bridge of the Enterprise. Introduce a menacing villain. Wrap it all up. Leave open a sequel. Toss in some drippy nostalgia (but not too much). It's amazing that it holds together as well as it does.

But it's okay if the plot was a little thin. Because really, it's a pilot episode. The main thing is to re-establish the franchise on firm footing and make you want more. The script cleverly allows the Star Trek franchise to enjoy a bit of a new beginning and be helmed in new directions. If this adventure is any indication, then good things await. I'm not holding my breath for the humanist parables we got from TNG, but I can hope.

Shaky camera work and unending lens flare make the movie a little hard to look at if you're prone to nausea (we watched from row 2). So GET THERE EARLY and get a good seat.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - PG-13 The action scenes are so jumbled and fast that you can hardly follow what's going on. And the plot is pretty much the same. Product placement is rampant. And all the teenage hormones get pretty embarrassing. November 18, 2009

Ronin - R This is a GREAT spy thriller / action movie. Somewhat offbeat from the usual American action movie fare, definitely a more European feel to it. Some absolutely rIdIcUlOus car chases and a few other very intense moments. Some fantastic accents. The cast is all excellent, especially Sean Bean! A real favorite of mine. Saw it in the theater and it was like being on a roller coaster ride. November 12, 2009

Kill Bill: Volume 1 - R Lots of flavor and good music, but it steps over the "farce" line too often, wobbling between genre homage, self-conscious satire, and straightfaced badass movie. I would have enjoyed the writing and craft better if it had been deployed with more restraint. The movie is ultimately self-indulgent, willfully cliche, and unrepentantly disgusting, all seemingly in service of some grand mission, which turns out to be the aping of old B movies. G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra - PG-13 I watched this on a plane, so I have an excuse! Some of the action and fighting scenes were really good. And many of the characters were well-done, like Scarlett, General Hawk & Snake Eyes. The guy they got to play Duke sucked, which is too bad because he's the "caucasian protagonist" they mainly centered the film around. There's a ridiculous love story in the movie that makes you want to puke and laugh and walk out all at the same time. The final big climactic battle scene was not very exciting. I preferred the smaller-scale hand-to-hand action scenes to the big, 100% CG attack on the Cobra base. Generally pretty good fun. Definitely on a lower level of cleverness than Transformers. I'll be surprised if there's a sequel. November 9, 2009
