Paranoid Park - R Amazing, in retrospect. Refreshing to see a movie about male youth that refuses to pander, consciously lacks adrenaline and confronts the stillness, ambivalence, flatness and indecision of youth in a respectful, productive and enlightening way.

Why don't men (and people) care when strangers suffer before their eyes? Why does apathy exist? It isn't heartlessness, Van Sant wisely says, but fear of being misunderstood. What a concept, that we can drive humanity -- and men -- to empathy and action through mutual understanding, not condemnation.

The Bubble (Ha Buah) - Unrated All in all, Eytan Fox is still on a very short list of directors who makes "gay" movies that are worth seeing. Solid story, pretty even-handed, with a fine ending that I would've preferred be more elusive. March 18, 2008

My Blueberry Nights - PG-13 March 18, 2008

Quiet City - Unrated The movie would be completely irrelevant if not for the last 2 minutes. With that, it transitions from standard mumblecore to better mumblecore. The end gave it a message. March 18, 2008

Mutual Appreciation - R Of this film, I remember very little. Too nostalgic for the New Wave perhaps. March 16, 2008

The Puffy Chair - R Hated the characters (was I supposed to?) But it had some surprisingly good emotional moments. February 25, 2008

Gone With the Wind - G I'm the last person on earth to see this movie. I love Scarlett, she reminds me of Hillary. February 25, 2008

A Raisin in the Sun - PG Such an American play/film. The shots are stunning, the acting superb, and themes so American and relevant for today. The ending is not perfect, in my opinion, but I'm nitpicking. Fabulous film about the (black) American experience. January 24, 2008

Six Degrees of Separation - R Love it. It's messy and talky and has a lot to say about what constitutes a life of meaning and worth. January 24, 2008

Flesh - R In the 60s critics said it was about nothing but flesh (ie too postmodern), but it actually critiques well social norms: domesticity, Puritanical work ethic, homo- and heterosexuality, parenthood, etc. And there's that great scene with the drag queens reading a magazine, a GENIUS depiction of sexual/media consumption in age of loose ties. I ate it all up. January 14, 2008

The District (Nyocker!) - Unrated It's pretty funny, but more importantly it dramatizes the globalization of hip-hop culture (not just music) and how easily anti-institutional/Western sentiments translate cross cultures. January 14, 2008
N/A
No End in Sight - Unrated Thank God someone made this movie. January 14, 2008

No Country for Old Men - R Ok - listen up Ebert. This movie is NOT better than There Will Be Blood. The themes are great (what place is their for god and morals in a country of violence and money?) but that comes from the book. Cinematically speaking, Anderson's film takes the prize. Bardem is brilliant, yes, bleh bleh. January 14, 2008

Diva - R I fell in love. Great camera work, great themes about the power of media and (men) over women (and people.), and a good plot line. And stop saying it's slow! January 14, 2008

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - R Does everything you want it to. Bloody, though. Almost cartoonishly so. January 14, 2008

Magnolia - R January 6, 2008

There Will Be Blood - R Complicated with no easy answers, Anderson made a movie about America by focusing on one man -- in the tradition of Citizen Kane and Gatsby. Some say it isn't political enough -- I think that misses the point. Some say the end isn't satisfying -- I think that represents more our anxieties about capitalism than anything else. The score is brilliant, the cinematography flawless. I loved this movie (and I normally hate movies set in the West) January 6, 2008

Charlie Wilson's War - R January 6, 2008

Metropolis - Unrated It's hard to surprise someone with visuals these days -- post-Blade Runner, Star Wars, etc. But even now, this is startling. December 23, 2007

The Golden Compass - PG-13 It was actually fun to watch. Why then did I forget all about it when it was over? December 23, 2007

Metropolitan - PG-13 Great script. Makes you hate the rich, then allows you to pity their small, myopic lives. December 23, 2007

Purple Violets - Unrated Good enough to satisfy my need for movies about attractive chatty New Yorkers, but what's with the ending? Too maudlin. December 23, 2007
