Baunsu ko gaurusu (Bounce KO Gals) - Unrated Not a sexual movie but it deals with selling sex. This movie has a lot of heart and I enjoyed it alot. It basically follows the activity of the 3 youngfemale characters for one night. The script is smart and the acting is spot on by the entire casr. It will hold your interest, with plenty of drama and suspense. See it! January 2, 2010

Sympathy for the Underdog - Unrated thought this movie was released around 2001; actually this movie was made around 1971. Basic yakuza fare; the lead actor is pretty cool and the plot is mildly interesting, but the supporting cast is rather pedestrian. QA fairly simple story and a pretty unrealistic outcome..nonetheless, held my interest and is an ok watch! December 29, 2009

Yo-Yo Girl Cop (Sukeban Deka: Codename Asamiya Saki) - Unrated check your brain at the door with this flick! lead character defends herself with only a yo-yo, and the battle at the end with her nemisis is yo-yo against yo-yo!! I am not making this up. A muddled plot, weak script and shoddy direction---trust me the best part of this movie is the eye candy..the 4 main female actresses are all stunning and cute as can be. Shi gan (Time) - Unrated interesting but flawed movie. If you suspend belief and view it more as a metaphor it seems to work better. Regardless, its poetic in nature but tends to drag toward the end. It does contain the creepiest scene I ever viewed in a movie however..you will know it when you see it! December 19, 2009

High and Low (Tengoku to jigoku) (Heaven and Hell) - Unrated Very compelling crime drama with fine acting split in two parts--tjhe actual kidnapping and recovery of the child, and the police investigation that entails. Both parts hold your interest and the final scene is haunting. See it. December 19, 2009

Natural City - R the year is 2080 but cigarette smoking is as popular as ever in this 'Blade Runner' look alike. As in BR, everything is dark and moody and rather slow and incoherent at times. The fight scenes are choreographed well with alot of stop action photography. Ji-tae Yu puts forth another fine effort, and the movie is definitely worth a watch for the effects and scenery. However, when boiled down to its core elements, its a romance with a cyborg story and the romantic angle really doesnt seem credible. The ending is a bit too shmaltzy for my taste, but I do applaud the effort. See it and decide for yourself! November 29, 2009

The Victim - Unrated First half hour or so gets 4 stars...the character Ting is played wonderfully and the film makes sense..there is a turning point however where the director got bored or had no clue where to take the story, so in effect the movie is turned upside down on its head and makes little sense as Ting the character disappears and voila! May appears with a new storyline...disappointing to say the least..2 stars after the first 30 minutes..overall a 3...movie showed lot of promise if it could have stayed on track. November 23, 2009

Hit Man File - Unrated Despite many preposterous and unexplainable situations the movie concocts, this film is very engrosssing, borrowing from many genres and films including Bonnie & Clyde. The storyline is a bit difficult to follow in the beginning, and after a few double-crosses it really does not matter. Fine acting and penty of violence keeps this story rolling. I enjoyed watching it despite its flaws! November 23, 2009

Som and Bank: Bangkok for Sale (One Take Only) - Unrated Basic and simple storyline and plot showing a slice of Thai underclass. I thought Pom was played perfectly and the movie is filled with many small scenes where the sum is greater than its parts in this Thai drama. The chemistry is definitely there between the 2 characters, and although the movie reaches a predictable outcome, I appreciated the poignant scenes with the little streetgirl. Don't expect much as this is a small movie but to me was enjoyable to watch for Pom's performance. November 23, 2009

Typhoon - R This Korean film is actually a melodrama cleverly disguised as an action thriller. Sure, on the surface there are plenty of gunfights and firepower, and the plot is about an impending terrorist act thrust upon South Korea. However, at its core the movie is about a North Korean family scorned and denied entry into the South, and the bitter aftermath of the surviving brother and sister. That inner story is truly touching and in the end plenty of sorrow. Typical reliable korean storytelling with fine acting especially by the villian more so than the stoic hero. Overall, definitely worth a watch! October 26, 2009

Poseidon - PG-13 Even though its a B-class acting ensemble with a predictable, cliche- driven script, what keeps this movie afloat is the special efx and the life and death situations thrust upon the characters. The movie has plenty of tension and fireworks underwater, and does hold the viewer's attention throughout. The film does have a rather pedestrian script, but its glossy look and terrific realism raises this film above standard fare. October 24, 2009

Airport 1975 - PG A decent follow-up to Airport 5 years earlier. Charlton Heston and Karen Black are the feature stars here, and the storyline provides a fair amont of suspense and thrills with believable acting. George Kennedy returns to provide continuity to the series and provides decent support. The series should have stopped right here, but the mid 70's were littered with disaster movies such as towering inferno and earthquake, and while this movie is not on such a grand scale, is a worthy entry. Recommended. October 9, 2009

Airport '77 - PG Not up to par with the original Airport or even Airport 1975. The storyline weakens (guess airport security was pretty lax in those days). How a 747 can crash land in the water and stay in one piece and THEN only sinks 100 feet or so in the bermuda triangle off the Atlantic Ocean is unplausible, but one has to suspend belief I guess! Jack Lemon is no Dean Martin (or Charlton Heston for that matter). A weaker "all-star" cast than the original, this story does have some suspense to it if you can simply disregard the obvious holes in this catostraphic scenario. An ok watch only... October 9, 2009

The Concorde ... Airport '79 (Airport 1980) - PG Final installment of the Airport series which had been steadily declining since the original in 1970. The efx are pathetic, but even worse the storyline is poor with plot holes big enough to fly the concorde through. The script is downright awful, with plenty of awkward moments, although meant to be serious, elicit snickers or belly laughs from the viewer. Poor george Kennedy, minimalized in Airport 1977, has a leading role in this feature but almost seems embarassed by this fiasco. A poor wrap-up to the series. This movie can best be summed with by the "cockpit" remark..poor taste and putrid. The movie seems to suddenly end; I guess the producer ran out of money and decided enough was enough. Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - PG A landmark movie for its time that should not be missed. It has excellent acting and is beautiful to look at with its stark black and white and plenty of gray shades. That being said, its a bit too over the top to be taken as a serious story...as a serious piece of film..yes...but the plot is downright silly. Peter Sellers as the president shines, but his other 2 roles in my opinion do not have much impact. First off, you know its Sellers, so that alone detracts from the character(s) he is portraying. Second, Dr. Strangelove as the bizarre nazi scientist is indeed strange and often hard to understand what he is saying..his role reminds me of Artie Gibson from the tv show Laugh-In (perhaps that is where the inspiration came from). There are pricelss interactions between the characters, especially George C. Scott and Sellers (the President). Pickens as the rodeo B-52 pilot is also memorable, as well as Hayden's portrayl as the base commander gone mad. However, the sum of these moments do not add up to a great movie. Somewhat entertaining yes, but as a farce it lessens any emotional impact the movie may (or maybe not) have been attempting to leave the viewer with. By all means see it..but if you are seeking an anti-nuke war movie with some punch, I recommend On the Beach, the australian 2000 version with Armand Assante. September 15, 2009

Phone (Pon) - R not to be confused with one missed call..but again, frights delivered thru a cellphone and a little girl..effective..and understandable by film's end September 8, 2009

The Monolith Monsters (Monolith) - PG Simply boring ..watching giant black rocks grow to the size of skyscrapers might turn on a geologist, but does little for me. Typical 50s effort; I simply prefer the aliens or flying saucers. August 20, 2009

Forbidden Planet - G Classic Sci-Fi film that stands up to the test of time. Intelligent, holds your interest, well written with strong acting. Don't miss it! August 20, 2009

The Angry Red Planet - Unrated Despite a decent cast, this 50s entry was poorly written and is neither exciting, suspenseful or that interesting. The red filter used on the camera lens while exploring on Mars was unique, but that alone does not compensate for this cheesy effort. August 20, 2009

The Crawling Eye (The Trollenberg Terror) - Unrated Cheesy and some laughable acting in this 1958 horror movie. I wanted to watch this more for my interest in Janet Munro, who was terrific in the early 60's sci-fi "The day the earth caught fire". She is little more than a pretty face here, with Forrest Tucker shouldering the serious performing. The rest of the cast are lightweight at best. What makes this movie interesting is this plot seems to be the inspiration for the recent movie "the Mist". Not a bad watch..just nothing special either. August 14, 2009

Bande à part (Band of Outsiders) - Unrated this movie was suposedly wai's inspiration for chungking express, my fave all time movie..however this movie jut is not all that...its watchable yes..just not that interesting...Karina is alluring to say the least..but overall the movie just so-so August 9, 2009

Chan oi dik, (Forgive and Forget) - Unrated This is a weak, forgettable film that pretends to be a ghost story about an amnesiac (the forget part of the movie title), that takes on double meaning by the film's end. The movie is tedious and not scary in the least. The only question the viewer ponders is if the lead actress is actually seeing a ghost or if its something else. Trust me, no ghosts here. The something else part is provided to the watcher in paint-by-number fashion at the end. Overall, a flat, slow moving story with flatter acting. June 21, 2009

Saimin (Hypnosis )(The Hypnotist) - Unrated An intriguing mystery that will genuinly scare you if the silly moments don't deter you first. Stick with this movie; some scenes and facial expressions almost seem out of place and may cause a burst of laughter; at times it appeared to me the lead detective wondered to himself (and the audience) what he was doing in this type of movie. The further the viewer is immersed in the story however, the ultimate hidden secret is revealed and has a chilling effect. This is an uneven movie, but original in concept with an interesting premise even if at times the execution of the story is shaky; the last twenty minutes will frighten you~~~~~ April 15, 2009

2 wol 29 il (February 29: 4 Horror Tales) - Unrated This korean horror story starts out promising but simply bogs down halfway on the highway toward the tollbooth. It really can't decide if it wants to be a ghost story or a case study on mental illness. Toward the end it falsely leads you into believing it was all about a mentally ill woman, but like most movies of this genre, throws in a twist at the very end to make you wonder again. Well, its indecisivenss only bewilders this viewer; its cheating trying to have it both ways. I guess this is suppose to be an artsy ending, but for me its more a cop-out. Acting was ok, just nothing new or bold or original. And as stated, the script seemed to travel in circles, really never getting anywhere, taking the viewer for a ride with no clear destination ever reached. April 4, 2009

Long nga (Legendary Assassin) - Unrated Jacky Wu can fight; if he was half the actor he is the fighter, his films would be classics. Alas, no such luck. Again we have a pretty ordinary story, with a decent but not spectacular surrounding cast, and a vehicle for Jacky to show off his 'skills'. That showcase does not appear till the very end, and it is almost to the point of absurdity, considering the amount of people he has to beat down. This move is nothing special, but an ok watch for all Jacky Wu fans. April 4, 2009
