| Drag Me to Hell - PG-13 | Really really disappointing. The acting was good (Allison Lohman,Justin Long) but the "special effects" were so cheesy, over the top, and a failed attempt at comedic gore that it was almost unwatchable. The lines between comedy and horror blurred enough to give me a headache, and the story went from well-written scares to low-budget stupidity seemingly written by a pre-teen boy, too fast to keep track of. Add an ending that we all saw coming in the saddest most predictable way, and you have a failure of a movie with some great casting. | December 5, 2009 | N/A | |||

| The Uninvited - PG-13 | This definitely wasn't bad for a remake of an original Asian film, but I am ashamed to say that I have not yet seen "A Tale of Two Sisters" the Korean original. I would say that this is more of a thriller than a horror movie because the music is dramatic but there aren't scares as much as suspenseful moments. The synopsis is also incorrect. Younger sister Anna comes home from a stay in the mental hospital after her mother's sudden death in a fire. Her mother's former nurse is now her father's new girlfriend. I liked Alex, the other sister alot better. The sisters try to piece together what happened to their mother and how to handle their father's new gold-digger girlfriend. Unfortunately, the evidence of foulplay comes much too quickly for much suspense to build between the characters. I'm definitely going to have to see the original! | July 2, 2009 | N/A | |||
| The Broken - R | I feel like I've seen or read about this plot a hundred times, but this one felt empty & half-finished. Minus half a star for the random naked people wandering around... | June 18, 2009 | N/A | |||
| From Within - R |
One of the 2009 (third) set of 8 Films To Die For, it's the first one I've seen and I hope it sets the standard for the rest of them. (Only 3 from the first year were good, and I haven't made it through 2008's yet-but it looks grim.)
The story is about a curse in a small redneck super-religious town. The town itself is creepy in that it's like a cult. The curse spreads from person to person making them kill themselves. The interesting part is that it's a demonic version of themselves that makes them do it. It's not hard to watch the crazy town die one by one because they get really annoying, fast. I wasn't thrilled with one aspect of the ending, but it was nice to see a horror movie that had a story instead of a mess of blood and guts for a change. |

| The Cry (La Llorona) - R |
The last thing I would call this movie is horror. It actually could have been a made-for-tv movie with the utter lack of violence and scares. I'd put it more in the category of slightly supernatural crime thriller. Minus the thrills. The scariest moment in the movie is as tame 2 woman having red-rimmed eyes because they're possessed. The death scenes are so boring that when a woman drowns her baby, it cuts to the crib mobile with the sound of splashing in the background. In another death,we see a hand under a big sheet. You could watch CSI and get more realism. Overall, not bad for a very PG television show ,but very weak for a movie. The acting isn't bad, the video quality is good, but the plot is a little rushed, making it somewhat confusing. They also clearly tried way too hard to avoid anything but insinuated child deaths, which just made it cheesy and uninteresting. One of the character speaks only Spanish, but instead of subtitling it as she speaks,we have to listen to it AGAIN as the detectives partner translates! It made me want to pull my hair out... no mas! The ending was almost worth it, but cut intentionally short for suspense... |

| Blackout - Unrated | This has to be one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen. There was only one likable and intelligent girl in the whole film, Claudia played by Amber Tamblyn, which made caring what happened to anyone else besides her grandmother nearly impossible. Three people are trapped in an elevator and as hours go by, there are flashbacks that show the recent event in all three of their lives. Unfortunately, one of them is a complete psychopath and it doesn't take long to figure out who. Amber is a great actress, but this movie -based on a book -had no payoff when it was finally over. SKIP this unless your a fan of the actress. Seriously. I feel like I was stuck in an elevator watching a horrible plot for 6 hours -although it was 1 and a half. I wouldn't even recommend the book... | May 30, 2009 | N/A | |||
