To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday
by BrianDVR'd this.
The film is only 12 years old and still it's like from a different, simpler world.
Total chick that is a little uneven, but the acting maks up for it.
Plus hilarious to see Freddie Prinze, Jr in what had to have been one of his first roles,
Cute -- leaves you with a good feeling. If you like chick flicks.

One Missed Call
by BrianTo tell the truth, this film is not majorly scary by any means, but I was still emgrossed in it --- it's fun to watch.
First of all, I love Shannyn Sossamon and will watch anything she's in, but also Sossamon and Burns had good chemistry on screen, I thought.
Yes, it's formulaic and very derivative, aside from the fact that it's a remake of J horror, but there's a popcorn flick element to it that makes it fun. It's fun and fans of Shannyn Sossamon will like this one.

Wild At Heart
by ElviraSailor and Lula are two freewheelin lovers in a road trip into the underbelly of the American south, as they escape from Lula's mother's attempts to end their love and have Sailor killed by hiring a gang of morally and physically twisted assassins.
The highlights here are the performances and the imagery created by Lynch (his own version of a real-life American gothic in which people have Wizard of Oz hallucinations). Nicolas Cage as Sailor is (surprisingly) excellent (Cage is a box of surprises, sometimes he's awful and sometimes he's pretty good). His character is a rock and roll road hero in a typical quest for redemption and freedom, and Cage plays him pefectly: a young man who takes himself a little too seriously, with a deep womanizing voice and a snakeskin jacket. Laure Dern plays Sailor's almost unbearably enthusiastic but beautiful girlfriend. Her real-life mother, Diane Ladd, plays Marietta, her psycho mother in an eerie and fascinating performance. The supporting cast is similarly funny and disturbing: Willem Dafoe as Bobby Peru, Isabella Rossellini as Perdita and Crispin Glover as Lula's cousin (his character makes absolutely no sense, but in this film nothing really has to).
There's really no point to trying to figure out what "the message" of Wild At Heart is. I think that it's simply Lynch's love letter to the dark side of America: his vision is that of a place so bizarre, so interesting, and yet so dark that it brings out the most obscure secrets of both lovers and even manages to put their relationship at risk... a declaration of love to music, to surrealism, and to love itself. The film is beautifully shot, the colors are often vibrant, the soundtrack is fantastic, and, what's even better, the plot is actually understandable if only on the surface, which is a nice variation within the director's body of work. There are priceless, hilarious, revolting, ridiculous, and romantic scenes. It may be self-indulgent, but what auteur film really isn't? And while it's not my favorite Lynch, it's up there. I enjoyed every second of it.Hey, you should really see this!

The Honeymoon Killers
by BrianThis is the original film that is based on the Lonely Hearts Killers, Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck, who would exploit women through the Lonely Hearts Club in the 1940s, take their money, and kill them.
The 2006 film Lonely Hearts is an updated version with Salma Hayek and Jared Leto in the roles, which I want to see now, but I wanted to see the original first.
The Honeymoon Killers is solid, but the truth of the lifes of the real people and the circumstances of the their upbringing and crimes is much more interesting than the movie lets on. I guess it had to be watered down for a 1969/1970 audience.
The acting iswell done tho and the film interesting enough, especially for the time.Hey, you should really see this!

Anatomy (Anatomie)
by BrianThis is a strange one, because it came out in 2000, yet it has the feel of a movie from ten years earlier. Plus, I saw it with dupped English voices and would have rather have seen it in German with subtitles.
It's a decent poremise and has potential, but it's handled so lamely and ameturishly.
See it if you love the genre, or if you love Franka Potente (which I do). Otherwisae, nothing special.Nothing special. See only if you like the genre or Franka Potente.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
by Veroniquebrendan fraser's the mummy franchise is obviously the assailing target for movie snobs, and it's been nominated by razzie award already. but surprisingly, roger ebert gives it praise and affirms that it's the best among the series. "the mummy: tomb of the dragon emperor" is certainly reminiscent of the old hollywood's interpretation of the inscrutable orient which i refer in a positively cheer of camp! (again.) it is permeated with cheese but definitely fun.
one amazing item is that this flick has actually some base of authentic chinese history of the first emperor who unifies the nation and is eager to seek the secret of immortal life since he dreams of world-domination. it IS true. and he did build a mighty grave with millions of soldiers to await his promising future to come. it is an intriguing premise to utilize that to associate with the mummy mythology.
but in the cinematic version, the emperor died of the sorceress' curse becuz he doublecrosses her by murdering her lover. then he and his army turns into statues.
also in the 1940s, brendan frasher's son raids the emperor's grave, then some royalty-crazed milirary man schemes to use his discoveries to ressurect the emperor. later frasher and his wife happen to deliver one secred gold egg (which also happens to be the key to unlock his curse) to shanghai. then the egg is robbed so the emperor lives! surely he's gonna mess around the world and shake it upon his palm!
there're several goofs in it, especially its casting. first of all, it is inappropriate for brendan frasher to be the father of a son who looks like his brother and the husband of a wife who looks older than him. second of all, there're times those chinese actors should have talked chinese to each other in some intimate scenes with subtitles but they forget. highly un-natural. third of all, luke ford is absolutely lame as frasher's son, and his chinese stinks! there's no word he utters is recognizable, and the way he flaunts it sucks. and also, he has the worst conversations of interracial flirtations in the film history. "oh, i like guns, but you like knives, but you're not my type" then they kiss?! forth of all, the incarnation of the emperor is apparently an oriental dragon, but the cgi simulates the mid-century flame-spitting dragon.
"tomb of dragon emperor" has every cliche of yellow face stereotype in vintage hollywood times, such as the orient as the villain, dragon-robed chic as the sexually compliant love interest to feast the western hero despite her seeming facade of kung-fu vixen ,and of course the western interference to maintain a better without eastern egomaniac depotism. but the humorous taunting of brendan frasher and john hannah makes it highly watchable. man fights in chinese battlefield, then he tries to clarify his friendly stance by "could you speak english?" then he starts to shout a name of the sorceress awkwardly to dodge the hostility. this flick has its drawbacks but still a feasible banquet of imaginary journey to the orient with its boyish mischievousness.
roger ebert puts it in a better way:
""Now why did I like this movie? It was just plain dumb fun, is why. It is absurd and preposterous, and proud of it. The heroes maintain their ability to think of banal cliches even in the most strenuous situations. Brendan Fraser continues to play Rick as if he is taking a ride at the Universal Studios Tour""i did have one mighty negative comment when my sis invited me to watch this "what's the point to watch a movie of yellow-face stereotypes played by real asians?"
then, just as the weird reason i liked "good earth", i enjoyed it and its highly imaginary campiness. the jokes work. and it is very creative to associate the mummy with real chinese history in the background. (truely impressive.)
i appreciate it better than mercenary pieces directed asian directors with a pretentious poise of high art that ernestly twists the historical facts, i.e., "crouching tiger anf hidden dragon" or upcoming phony "red cliff"...etc.

A Streetcar Named Desire
by ElviraMuch praised film indeed, which is why I approached it with usual skepticism. It, of course, did not disappoint. With such a fine source material as is Tennessee Williams, whose plays I always enjoy reading, and with Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando, it was difficult to fail.
The highlight is the performance, both Brando's and Leigh's, but there's something to be said for the direction too: inobtrusive, straight to the point, not experimental, not symbolist, just a plain good delivery of the story and a close faithfulness to the originality of the script.
Marlon Brando is stunning. He becomes the quintessential macho, although one with internal weaknesses and insecurities. There are few scenes in the history of cinema as unforgettable as Brando standing on the street, crying and yelling for his wife, Stella. He is, to put it simply, powerful, and dominates the screen at all times, towering over Leigh both physically and metaphorically. This is a milestone in the history of acting, and now that I've seen it I realize how many later performances drew their essence from this one.
Vivien Leigh is also fantastic as Brando's unstable sister-in-law. Worn down by financial and emotional crisis, probably broke, capricious, and hypocritical, she is a disturbing, mortifying figure lurking throughout the film, intermittently taking the spotlight, thrashing the place, and receding. She makes us feel sorry for her and hate her, and vice versa, for 2 hours straight.
With that said, it's difficult to state anything previously unknown about this classic. Except perhaps "Watch it!", because it's a pleasure to witness such a display of virtuosism.Hey, you should really see this!
