Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead - Unrated I actually rate the first Joy Ride (or Roadkill as it was called in the UK) pretty highly... It was smart, creepy and a little scary, with a decent cast and decent twists. The second film has none of those things... Instead it throws Rusty Nails in as some sort of sadistic "Jigsaw from Saw" wannabe torturing a bunch of kids for no apparent reason. At least in the first film you got the feeling that Rusty Nails had some sort of traumatic childhood or some reason to get as upset as he did. If that had been explored in the second film, it may have been a worthwhile sequel but it isn?t. Instead it?s a ?teen horror? by numbers that is worth avoiding, especially if you like the first film. Oh, and the jumpiest moment is when one of the teenagers smashes a windows in the first ten minutes. That should be a clue as to how scary this film is overall (hint: it is not). The only worthwhile scene is the ?dice game? but it really does belong in a franchise that might have handled it better (Saw). August 9, 2009

The Haunting in Connecticut - PG-13 Typically, I'm not normally a fan of horror movies with a 15 rating. They normally feel like something's being held back and they're just normally not as scary or as realistic. But The Haunting is an exception. The only reason why this film is a 15 is because there's no bad language, no sex and not a lot of visual violence. But it is freaking scary. It's a really good story, freaky, jumpy and, if you believe in this sort of thing, it actually happened. And it?s jumpier and scarier than a lot of higher-rated movies. The acting, given the track record of having young actors in a horror film, is actually very good, and Kyle Gallner is pretty exceptional and moving in his performance as a young boy, dying of cancer, and obsessed with what?s happening around him. Basically, it's a pretty scary film that's kept my housemate awake ever since. August 6, 2009

Angels & Demons - PG-13 Angels and Demons is a very different film to The Da Vinci Code. It was written (and set) before The Da Vinci Code, but ? for the sake of not confusing movie goers ? the movie version is set afterwards which actually sets up the tension between Robert Langdon and the church in a way that makes sense.

The story itself is far more predictable than The Da Vinci Code, but it flows at a much better pace. There are impressive and tense set pieces and Tom Hanks is so watchable in his role. The rest of the characters are equally as well cast.

Angels and Demons feels more like a treasure hunt than The Da Vinci Code, and it?s probably not ?as smart?, but then so is the book compared to the intricate nature of The Da Vinci Code which was Dan Brown?s second Robert Langon novel.

I?m sure fans of the book will disagree with many of Ron Howard?s decisions in the film making process. But in my opinion, his decisions were made with the goal of creating a story that doesn?t let up in pace, holds the dramatic tension for the entire 2 hour duration and drives the story forward with interesting characters that are neither good or evil.

It?s a really good film, and definitely worth watching.

Star Trek - PG-13 If there was one film I wasn?t particularly looking forward to, it was a new Star Trek film. I?ve never been a particular fan of the franchise (although I used to watch Next Generation as a kid, and I?ve seen some of the movies but can?t remember a thing about them), preferring Star Wars over all that ?beam me up? stuff, but after catching an early trailer, and finding out that the film was in the hands of JJ Abrams, a man who can do no wrong as far as I?m concerned, I thought if I was going to watch it, I might as well watch it in style, so we drove the three hours to the Imax in London to catch it, last Friday night.

The film was amazing.

I?m not entirely sure how faithful it was to the original series, movies or overall timeline (although the time travel elements could conveniently explain anything away), but I?m not sure that it mattered. The movie was phenomenal. It was fast paced, never dragged, and the casting, effects, sound and picture was breathtaking.

As for the lack of William Shatner, I?m glad. The movie benefitted from ?nodding? at the past films and past stories. Any sort of appearance for Shatner would have thrown the new film back into camp territory and this was, in all honesty, the first time the franchise had managed to avoid it, completely. The inclusion of Leonard Nimoy was vital to the story and worked well.

Over the last few years, there has been an influx of reboots for dead franchises. This is quite possibly the best reboot (topping, for me, Batman Begins).

Anyway, a really, really good film. Can?t fault it, really.

Tropic Thunder - R A pretty funny film, worth watching for the trailers and the beginning, and for Tom Cruise's cameo. Fairly funny, but about 30-minutes too long. April 28, 2009

Shrooms - Unrated The sort of film you can only really watch once. In the cinema, I thought it was pretty lame, and then the ending made the whole film seem sort of genius-like. Watching it again, on DVD, without the element of surprise, the film falls short of clever and scary. Ok, but only the once. April 28, 2009

The Strangers - R The Strangers was a pretty decent scary film. It was a scary premise, and executed fairly well, mostly thanks to the amazing use of sound. It's downfall was its middle section which was dragged out far too long and turned into 25 minutes of the two leads being chased from location to location. Other than that, it wasn't bad. Saw V - R Not quite as good, or as gory, as the previous films (which I love), but it does a very good job of tying the past films together. The first and last "traps" are pretty sick, the rest are just fillers and don't match up to the "torture house" from the second film. March 21, 2009

Eagle Eye - PG-13 A pretty good film. Slightly far-fetched, but still clever with a decent enough storyline, and amazing special effects. The alternative ending on the DVD, though, is beyond crap! March 20, 2009

Friday the 13th - R Pretty scary, very jumpy and tense? The only downside (apart from there wasn?t a lot of back-story for Jason) was that most of the characters were morons and I was virtually rooting for them to get torn apart. That, and the fact that they were acting like they?d never seen a horror film themselves. Otherwise, a pretty good reboot to the series (but not as good as the reboots for Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween). February 15, 2009

Eden Lake - R I caught this film because it's made by the same people as The Descent which I loved. Take every decent horror film from the last few ways, keep what made them scary, but strip away the supernatural and the monsters, and you have Eden Lake. It's a horror film that has something interesting to say about gang culture and upbringing in Britain. It wasn't what I thought it would be (I went into it thinking it would be about a monster in a lake or something), and it was pretty sick in places, but it's the kind of film that stays with you for days afterwards. Thought provoking and scary. February 11, 2009
