Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989, PG-13)
This comes close to the quality of Raiders, hence the same star rating, but it is just off the same level, Raiders remains the best. for a few good years, when I first saw the Indy films when I was 8, this one was my favourite. Looking back it is probably because it is the funnier, lighter one out of the three. They really needed to lighten the tone after Temple of Doom. The key that made this film great was the casting of Sean Connery as Indy's Dad. Ford and Connery have brilliant chemistry and are just a joy to watch. The supporting cast are also good, Allison Doody playing a very different girl to the previous two, the late great Denholm Elliot returns to his role as Marcus Brody, Julian Glover takes the baddie role and Jonh Rhys Davies is back as Sallah. All three Indy movies have great scenes, Last Crusade has the Tank fight, motorcycle chase, speedboat chase, Grail trials and a very intresting opening sequence giving background on the Indy character. River Pheonix shows what a talent he was, he makes you believe he could be a young HArrison Ford, it is such a shame about his early death, he was a marvellous actor with a bright future. After all is done with, the four good guys all get on their horses and charge out of the canyon of the crescent moon and into the sunset. A perfect ending to a astonishing trilogy. |
