The Fall
by ElisaWeird and wonderful, The Fall is nothing short of a contemporary The Wizard of Oz, a hypnotic and intoxicating tale of ravishing beauty and spellbinding imagination.
Films about children and films made for them are not always synonymous, but they often address the same subjects: imagination and the bold force of storytelling. "Pan's Labyrinth" is among the most rapturously disturbing movies of the first type; "The Princess Bride" is among the most enchanting of the second. "The Fall" falls somewhere between the two. There is death and violence and terrible sadness, but it's also rich in ideas and humanity, and it reminds us that fiction is real to the one who imagines it.
Haters of fantasy and tearjerked drama might have some trouble with "The Fall", but if you take it for what it is -- if you swallow both genres whole -- the film becomes something close to allegory. It's a fiction within a fiction about the curative power, and possessive lure, of fiction. Who owns a tale? The one who tells it, or the one who listens? --"It's my story," Roy says. "Mine, too," replies Alexandria. -- Both become invested in the telling. And by the credits, so had I.
"The Fall" is wholly beguiling, an utterly transportive piece of filmmaking as dazzling in its visual audacity as it is in its spartan simplicity. It stole the breath from my lungs and coaxed tears from my eyes, a true work of art and one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen.posted 412 days ago -

THE FRIEND REPLIED
'WHEN SOMEONE HURTS US

Legend
by ElisaI was ten years old when I first saw Legend, and I still love what it represents, it's the epitome of a Fairytale movie. Lili (a.k.a. Lily, the symbol of virginity) and Jack (one of the most common names in folk tales and nursery rhymes) are character types, not character studies. We are never told what Lili is the princess of; we have no idea what Jack does in the forest. Everything is generic, nothing has a definite location in time or place. But I'm glad Scott didn't include any phoney-baloney character development just because he was making a film in the progressive 80's. He presents LEGEND in exactly the manner that the title would suggest - as a universally recognized consciousness, where archetypes replace personalities. Unfortunately, this is to the expense of Tim Curry's Dark Lord, the most memorable character in the movie, who once again proves that the devil gets all the best lines. Curry steals the show with his performance - it's a shame he doesn't get a chance to do more in the picture. Scott sidesteps his uninvolving characters by keeping his frame as busy as possible. Never in my life have I seen so much "billowing" in a movie before. Leaves, snow, smoke, petals, steam - Scott keeps the air alive (I think he's going overboard when he introduces soap bubbles) to remind us that the story is steeped in a magical atmosphere, and also to highlight the sentience of air as an elemental force. The other three elements of ancient cosmology - fire, water, and earth - are similarly dominant throughout the story: Jack swims underwater, breaks through ice, is covered by snow, journeys into the earth, battles through steam and fire, and even harnesses the power of the sun for his final victory. Legend is gorgeously photographed, and invokes a dreamlike world. Jerry Goldsmith's beautiful score functions so well it's hard to imagine watching this film without it.
Legend is alternately silly, sublime, magical, wondrous and (at times) pretty darn corny - which is exactly what a Fairytale is.posted 543 days ago -

House of Flying Daggers (Shi mian mai fu)
by ElisaGorgeous cinematography, incredible landscapes, stunning fight sequences, and a heartbreaking romance....whats not to like!
On a visual level, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS is just astounding. And it often is on an emotional level as well, as the actors, and the emotions they convey, rise above the melodramatic trappings of the script, giving us two people we can genuinely feel for. However, the many lingering shots of lovers in contemplation do tend to drag on a bit long at times, breaking up the film's pacing in-between the fight scenes.
As for the fights themselves, they prove to be quite impressive - although they will require that you suspend your belief in the laws of physics for two hours. While the characters do not engage in excessive high-flying wire work, they do make flying daggers (and swords, and bamboo spears, and wooden stakes) do all kinds of gravity-defying ricochets and boomerang loop-de-loops, striking their targets with laser precision. Believable? Not at all. But fun as hell to watch? Most definitely.posted 574 days ago -
