Singin' in the Rain (1952,  G)
2
300 (2007,  R)
300
The most entertaining slice of bigotry you'll ever see. I loved it and despised it in almost equal measure.
3
The Eagle (,  Unrated)
4
Son of the Sheik (,  Unrated)
Son of the Sheik
A great film marred only by a seriously questionable rape scene.
5
The Godfather (1972,  R)
The Godfather
Almost perfect.
6
Back to the Future (1985,  PG)
7
Back to the Future Part II (1989,  PG)
8
Die Hard (1988,  R)
9
Ghost Busters (Ghostbusters) (1984,  PG)
10
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989,  PG-13)
11
Ocean's 11 (Ocean's Eleven) (1960,  PG-13)
Ocean's 11 (Ocean's Eleven)
Fun, entirely different from The Other One, I like this better because it has Dean Martin in it, and the Other One does not. Simple as.
12
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl
Almost perfect. This is going to live for a very long time. Roll on Dead Man's Chest.
13
The Godfather, Part II (1974,  R)
The Godfather, Part II
None better. Except the first picture.
14
The Godfather, Part III (1990,  R)
The Godfather, Part III
Last third brilliant, first two not. Still, rather this than a Paul Walker movie any day.
15
The Mummy (1999,  PG-13)
16
The Mummy Returns (2001,  PG-13)
17
The Phantom of the Opera (2004,  PG-13)
The Phantom of the Opera
Better than I was expecting....... slow but somehow still quite endearing. Phantom cool.
18
V for Vendetta (2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
A truly excellent, terrifying and yet hopeful film that made me sit up and think. It even made me think I should do something for the world. That I haven't isn't a failing of the film. Simply... life-changing.
19
Blood & Sand (1922,  Unrated)
20
Adventures of Don Juan (1948,  Unrated)
Adventures of Don Juan
The greatest Hollywood shagger takes on the greatest legendary shagger and does so with mirth and tongue in cheek (not always his own). Viveca Lindfors was also a decent match for Flynn as the queen. Robert Douglas suitably smarmy and evil. Also note the censor-enraging tights.
21
The Sea Hawk (1940,  Unrated)
The Sea Hawk
Rollicking, rousing, glorious. Once upon a time, pirate movies didn't need to be funny to be the best thing you ever saw.
22
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938,  PG)
The Adventures of Robin Hood
There's simply no better version of this tale. None. If anyone tells you otherwise they're either lying or moronic.
23
The Sheik (1921,  Unrated)
The Sheik
Valentino gurns, the scenario is almost as bigoted as Birth of A Nation and yet it's still a fantastic film. Fall in love with Rudolph today.
24
The Eagle (1925,  Unrated)
The Eagle
A wonderful picture in which Valentino gets to play a really decent fellow and has improved from the eye-bulging days. You never had it so good.
25
Casablanca (1943,  PG)
Casablanca
Seriously, if you don't like this there IS something wrong with you.
26
Gone With the Wind (1939,  G)
Gone With the Wind
Not for everyone, but fantastic at what it does.
27
The Wizard of Oz (1939,  G)
28
Broadway Melody of 1940 (1940,  Unrated)
Broadway Melody of 1940
Eleanor Powell wonderful, Astaire OK. Begin The Beguine one of the great movie dances. Plot on holiday.
29
For Me And My Gal (1942,  Unrated)
For Me And My Gal
Busby Berkeley was not a genius as Mickey Rooney said, but it's a perfectly serviceable picture just the same. Interesting to see Gene Kelly's first film knowing what he'd become.
30
An American in Paris (1951,  Unrated)
31
Queen Christina (1933,  Unrated)
32
Rebel Without a Cause (1955,  PG-13)
33
Giant (1956,  G)
34
Gilda (1946,  PG)
35
Bonnie and Clyde (1967,  R)
Bonnie and Clyde
A watershed, some might say. Beautiful, bloody and complex.
36
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953,  Unrated)
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Fun, good songs, but if it weren't for MM, this would've been forgotten long ago.
37
How To Marry A Millionaire (1953,  Unrated)
How To Marry A Millionaire
Fun but ultimately just froth.
38
How to Steal a Million (1966,  Unrated)
How to Steal a Million
Best lo-tech heist ever. Audrey is pretty, Peter is charming. Brilliant bit of fluff.
39
Roman Holiday (1953,  Unrated)
Roman Holiday
Manages to make Rome look good. Bittersweet and beautiful and thoroughly believable (somehow).
40
The Barefoot Contessa (1954,  Unrated)
The Barefoot Contessa
Witty, sharp and just a little too wordy.... Bogart is great, Gardner is beautiful and somehow it still falls ever so slightly flat. Worth watching a couple of times, but hard to really love.
41
Mildred Pierce (1945,  Unrated)
42
Woman of the Year (1942,  Unrated)
43
The Philadelphia Story (1940,  Unrated)
44
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967,  Unrated)
45
The Song Remains The Same (1976,  PG)
The Song Remains The Same
Ludicrous, pompous and stupid, but brilliant. Perce never looked so good - just a shame the music lacks verve, zest and energy.
46
Saved! (2004,  PG-13)
Saved!
Inspired, moving and funny as, er, Hell.
47
Tommy (1975,  PG)
Tommy
Bonkers terrible wonderful crazy sexy nasty fabulous. One of the great moments of the 70s rock scene.
48
Lisztomania (1975,  R)
Lisztomania
Mad as a fucking hat box, but any movie that features Pope Ringo and an eight foot cock and the immortal words "Piss off, Brahms!" can't totally suck. Wish I could find it on DVD.
49
The Last Waltz (1978,  R)
50
It's a Wonderful Life (1946,  Unrated)
51
The African Queen (1951,  Unrated)
52
Venus (2006,  R)
Venus
Peter O'Toole deserves immortality as far as I'm concerned. A beautiful, important and challenging film.
53
The Adventures of Don Juan (1948,  Unrated)
54
The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed
An astounding movie. Deserving of That Oscar. Interesting, thoughtful and bloody.
55
Gangs of New York (2002,  R)
Gangs of New York
Majestic. Wonderful, although let's be honest- we didn't need Cameron Diaz at all. Scene with the Irish at the church will remain with me until the day I die.
56
What a Way to Go! (1964,  Unrated)
57
The Band Wagon (1953,  Unrated)
The Band Wagon
One of the very best of the musicals - certainly one of the last.
58
Mogambo (1953,  Unrated)
Mogambo
Wonderfully photographed, Gable and Gardner fabulous, Kelly OK.
59
Citizen Kane (1941,  PG)
60
The Third Man (1949,  Unrated)
61
To Kill A Mockingbird (1962,  Unrated)
To Kill A Mockingbird
This is one of the very best motion pictures ever made - I challenge anyone to find anything wrong with it.
62
Cobra (1986,  R)
63
Beyond the Rocks (1922,  Unrated)
Beyond the Rocks
A bit stilted, but not nearly so bad as it could've been. Check out Valentino as an honorable English toff!
